Photometry vs Spectroscopyand other fights T. Appourchaux Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale, Orsay, France Siamois KO Meeting, 15-16 May 2006
Outline of the talk • Space vs ground-based • Photometry vs Spectroscopy • Wrestling with sampling • Antartica vs Network • Conclusion
Data utilized • SOHO data: GOLF, VIRGO/LOI • Ground-based data: BiSON, GONG • 10 years of data chopped in 150-days chunk averaged (representative of the mean spectrum)
Space vs ground-based • Less noise from space (5 times less for GONG, 8 times less for BiSON) • Daily aliases can be reduced significantly (GONG case) • More modes can be detected at low frequency from the high S/N • The winner is: SPACE!
Photometry vs Spectroscopy • Less noise from spectroscopy (20 times less) • Noise is shaped differently (low frequency noise higher) • About twice as many modes can be detected • Degree identification from different responses • Higher l can be detected • Still photometry is simpler than spectroscopy (significantly cheaper!) • The winner is: SPECTROSCOPY!
