  1. Diversity & Inclusion for Orgs

  2. Why? • Establish a culture early of acceptance for others of different social identities • Drafting a constitution, so what should you put in?

  3. Things to Think About

  4. Required Membership Article Membership in this organization is open to all JMU students and will not be restricted on the basis of age, ability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, color, religion, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or political affiliation except in circumstances outlined in federal and state laws.

  5. Location of Meetings • Buildings send a message of who is welcome, invited, and who you want • Accessible and welcome to everyone?

  6. Meeting Times • Established ahead of time: Becomes habitual every semester, folks know the time and when they should schedule classes around • More popular with larger and/or established orgs • By popular vote each year or semester • What are other opportunities to be involved without punishment? • Meeting requirements that allow for flexibility

  7. Conducting Meetings • Accessibility of materials • Printed copies • Put materials online for screen readers/accessibility • Powerpoints that are high contrast • Large room? Use a mic!

  8. Finances & Dues • Popular requirement for good standing in an organization • How to opt out (confidentially), payment plan, other ways to be an active, positive member without needing to contribute financially

  9. Application Questions • What are you asking and how? • Favorite memes, places to eat, TV Show, etc • What purpose do the questions serve, and is there a way to ask something different for the same information? • “We want to make sure we get along with our members/they are a good fit” • Who is reviewing? Is it a “blind” application? How are you preventing bias?

  10. Working with Other Orgs • Collaboration vs Contribution • Beware wanting to be the “in name only” collaborator • Why that org? What can they contribute? • Planning ahead with clear expectations with other organizations • Build a lasting relationship

  11. Getting Called Out • Be willing to hear out who is calling you out and about what • Reach out to appropriate offices/persons as necessary to see what you can do, what are resources for your members • Show you care and you are trying

  12. Last Thoughts • Actions speak louder than words. Don’t just say you’re inclusive; how are you acting, showing your org in inclusive? • Everyone is going to make mistakes; saying or doing the wrong thing is an opportunity for growth, not a reflection of who you are as a person or what your org stands for. How you react is just as important. • Members who do not hold the same values: how will your org cultivate positive members and disassociate from others?
