  1. Racism in the University AFAM/WMST 2020

  2. Examine racism in a university setting. • The purpose of this discussion is to make students aware that racism does in fact occur in universities and how to avoid it. Group Members • Jennifer Dutton • Latonya Howard • Tina Lai • Percy Leggett • Kimberly Minor

  3. Ways universities are guilty of perpetuating and reproducing inequity. • Teaching of a basically Eurocentric curriculum. • Not too many courses on racism • Absence of an anti-racist pedagogy Source: Racism and the University

  4. Evidence of structural inequality in the university. • Lack of minority representation at faculty and administration levels. • University has been able to maintain its sacrosanct values and traditions for generations because it formerly served a more homogenous population and community. • Curriculum lacks anti-racial classes. Source: Racism and the University

  5. Ways to reduce racism in the university. • Jogging against racism. • Add more classes on racism and minority studies.

  6. Real life examples of racism at Valdosta State University. • Students Clash Over Remark • For example, last month, during Black history month, my RA put up a board where people are able to add remarks on racism; and it backfired on my RA. Racism flares in hall

  7. What this means… • Many may not be aware, but racism is still among us all.

  8. Next steps… • There should be more programs that honor and educate about each specific ethnic group. -Alonzo Thompson • We should have more programs set up to reflect each culture and publicize them better. -Chandra Moran • Maybe there should be a diversity week where everyone comes together to discuss their culture and inform everyone of their background. -Chris Williams

  9. Comments from surveys on how to reduce racism… • More interracial gatherings/socials. • First of all, the elimination of racism must begin in the individual. The institution could do things to promote people of all races to gather together by common interest, but it must start in oneself. • There has to be a change in the ignorance and minds of people who are racists.
