  1. Alcohol and DrugsBehavioral Risk and Prevention Methods By: Stephanie Collins Health Education Grade Level: 9-10

  2. Purpose To give the learners the knowledge they will need to cope with the pressures concerning drugs and alcohol. Providing the learners with this knowledge will motivate them to prevent behavioral risk and adhere to positive choices.

  3. TEKS Objective The student analyzes the relationship between unsafe behaviors and personal health and develops strategies to promote resiliency throughout the life span. The student is expected to analyze the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other substances such as physical, mental, social, and legal consequences.

  4. Alcohol Is: A chemical that takes the form of a colorless, flammable liquid . The substance in alcohol is ethyl alcohol- ethanol for short.

  5. The Effects of Alcohol Use: • Long term use can lead to liver, heart, and stomach problems. • Night terrors, frequent awakening from sleep • Suppresses appetite • Loss of brain cells and impairs alertness • Respiratory failure and death.

  6. Drugs Are: Chemical substances that can affect your health, your feelings, and your behavior.

  7. The Effects of Drug Use: • Cocaine: Anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia elevated blood pressure. • Marijuana: Inhibit sexual development in teenagers, psychological dependence. • Heroin: Shaking, sweating, vomiting, convulsions, and death.

  9. Things You Can Do To Say NO! • Avoid peer pressure. (Who are your friends?) • Get involved in positive extracurricular activities. (volunteer, sports, mentor) • Talk to your parents, friends, counselor, or teacher about your concerns with alcohol or drugs.
