  1. New Directions in Providing Instruction and Training Presented by Northwest Regional ESD Christina Meier-Nowell-Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist Laura LaMarsh- Related Services Coordinator

  2. Background for Training • The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) provides a grant to support the Statewide Consultative and Resource Services for Autism Spectrum Disorder. • Trained specialists are available to assist the Regional Programs and districts in meeting the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) needs of students with disabilities who are eligible under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA 2004)

  3. Purpose of Training ASD Specialists • Increase state, regional and local capacity for serving students with ASD through the dissemination and implementation of evidence based practices. • New specialists will have working knowledge of all domains spelled out in the draft ASD Specialist competencies recommended to the Oregon Commission on Autism Spectrum Disorder.

  4. Why Use Technology ... • Firstly, it is radically growing “globally”, especially in the United States (Barker, 2002). • Secondly, …some…teachers have radically changed their whole method of teaching so that the class venue for the teacher and the student becomes the computer. The classroom now is a "virtual learning environment." Learning is no longer bound by space and time (Franklin and Peat, 2001). • By Thomas D. Lynch and Cynthia E. Lynch
