  1. Nordic research and training network ”Discovery Physics at the LHC” Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001

  2. Introduction This particle physicsnetwork exploresthephysics discovery potentialat theLarge Hadron Collider, LHC. The aim is to pull togetherNordic particlephysicists, theorists and experimentalists, to seek new physics ideas, and to study the experimentalsignatures of new physics. Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001

  3. LHC Physics LHC is the main particlephysicscommitment in theNordic countries for thenext decade The high energy and luminosity of LHC offers unprecedented physics opportunities: exploration of the high energy frontier, and precise measurements of heavy quarks, W/Z etc. Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001

  4. New Physics New physics isbound to appear in the 1 TeV energy scale: • One or several Higgs bosons, observable at LHC below about 1 TeV. • Supersymmetry: supersymmetric particles • Extra dimensions Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001

  5. The Nordic Context ä Particle physics research groups are typically small _ use network to create centers-of-excellence with both experimental and theoretical competence ä Concentrate resources for supervision and training of research students and young researchers ä Exploitation of LHC data: improve readiness for LHC data analysis in the highly competitive world-wide physics community Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001

  6. The Network Programme NorFA supports the network for 2001-2003. Work proceeds in the working groups: ä SUSY scenarios: investigation of new decays ä Extra dimensions and other new models ä Higgs sector • CP violation in B decays, rare B decays, top decays,... Network workshops twice a year, training courses for students Paula Eerola Science Today – Women Talking Physics Uppsala 23.3.2001
