Challenges and Opportunities for CBR: Perspectives of a University-Based Researcher Charlotte Loppie Ph.D. Dalhousie University
Challenges of CBR • Differences in language (paradigmatic, cultural) • Overcoming community distrust of researchers • Accommodating multiple role demands on research partners • Consensus of diverse understandings of research goals • Negotiating a balance between academic and community relevance • Culturally appropriate Ethical Review • Implementing OCAP principles within academic protocols
OCAP Principles Ownership - guardianship and protection as they relate to knowledge/information. Control – of research processes and products involving all aspects of community partners’ lives and institutions Access - to all sources of data, held in various locations. • the right to manage access to collective community information. Possession - literal stewardship of research findings
Challenges of CBR • Ensuring that partnerships reflect shared responsibilities as well as benefits • Negotiating time lines that address academic and community needs • Incorporating diverse interpretations of data • Negotiating data ownership and publication rights • Preparing conditions for sustainability
Opportunities of CBR • Increases cultural validity and reduces potential harm • Encourages multiple perspectives, tolerance for complexity of issues, and conflict resolution • Encourages development of group process skills, communication, commitment and equality • Extends research and subsequent interventions beyond a specific project • Facilitates development of infrastructure, capacity and sustainability
Opportunities of CBR • Increased relevance of the research questions • Facilitates emergence of new research questions • Increased quality of data • Enhanced utility and relevance of data • Increased and improved knowledge transfer • Facilitates the translation of research into policies and programs • Builds trust between researchers and communities • Enhances mutual capacity building
CBR is complicated, time consuming, challenging work – that is entirely worth it!!Many Thanks
