California Standards • •8.0 Student organized and describe distribution of data by using of different methods, including frequency table, histogram, standard line and bar graphs, stem-and-leaf displays, scatter plots, and box of whisker plots. • •17.0 Students determine confidence interval for a simple random sample from a normal distribution of data and determine the sample size required for a desired margin of error. • •18.0 Student determine the P-value for a statistic for a simple random sample from a normal distribution

  3. Hypothesis • We believe that the average rate for Century students who like pasta is 4.

  4. Data Collection • The sampling technique we used was Stratified sampling. The 4 of us sampled 25 seniors, 25 juniors, 25 sophomores, and 25 freshmen during class and during 2nd lunch.

Data • Rate for Pasta (scale of 1-5) 1 being the worst and 5 being the best • Freshman: 4,4,3,4,2,5,4,3,3,3,4,3,3,2,4,3,4,4,3,4,4,3,2,3,4 • Sophomores: 3,4,4,4,3,3,3,3,4,3,4,4,5,4,4,3,3,4,4,3,5,3,4,4,4 • Juniors: 4,4,4,3,3,4,4,3,3,4,3,4,3,4,2,3,4,4,4,4,4,2,4,5,5 • Seniors: 4,4,4,3,3,4,3,4,3,4,4,3,4,4,4,2,5,4,4,4,4,3,5,5,4

  6. Statistics • From our survey, the sample mean is 3.65 with a sample standard deviation of 0.72.

  7. Confidence Interval • 95% Confidence Interval • Z-Interval • (3.5089 – 3.7911) • We are 95% confident the population mean rate for people who like pasta is between 3.5 and 3.8.

  9. Error Analysis • Our sample mean is 3.65, and the 95% confidence level for the population mean is between 3.5 to 3.8. • Our sample error is due to one of our group members being absent for one of the days we began surveying.

  10. Conclusion • We hypothesized that the average rate for Century students who like pasta is 4. In our survey of 100 students, we find the sample mean of 3.65 with a standard deviation of 0.72. We conclude that the population mean for all the students we surveyed is between 3.5 to 3.8 with 95% confidence. We test our initial hypothesis with 5% level of significance, and confirm our hypothesis is incorrect.
