  2. What and why • First class—BIG picture and connecting (dis)engaged learners to ELA • Tonight: Comprehension strategy instruction with online and offline texts • Building understanding of comprehension and vocabulary lesson plan as well as text set assignment

  3. Writers’ Notebook • For the first 10 minutes of so of class, draft an autobiographical essay that centers on your own English language arts (ELA) experiences as a younger student and/or as an adult student today. • If you need a few prompts…what did you like to read and write? What didn’t you like about ELA and why? What messages did you get from adults about ELA?

  4. Turn and Talk and…??? • Turn and talk about your writers’ notebook writing (choice) • Syllabus or course questions? Revision on wikispace • Access to wikispace? • Comprehension and Vocabulary Lesson Plan assignment • Sample NERA Journal

Session 2 Reading • Laura Pardo, 2004 --The reader+thetext+strategy instruction=meaning --comprehension strategies? • Don Leu and Lisa Zawilinski, 2007 --why teach online comprehension strategies? --which ones may be more important online? --what’s same/what’s different? --share 3 c’s with a partner…both process and content

Laptop Workshop • First things first, Log in and Wikispace ease • Then our Task: Choose one of the 7 comprehension strategies discussed in Laura Pardo’s article and explore, with a partner, the Mosaic of Thought website Powerpoint and lesson plans on your comprehension strategy. • Report out with the goal of deepening our understanding of that this comprehension is, why teach, how to teach it, and when might it be used by our students again. • http://www.readinglady.com/mosaic/

Session 3 • Making thinking visible • Reading—think alouds and vocabulary strategy instruction • Bring a quality “offline” text that you hope to use in your comprehension/vocabulary lesson plan • Join the wikispace and be sure to read the lesson plan directions and rubric • Post any questions or thoughts you have in the discussion section of the EDC 528 wikispace
