Why Stanford/San Francisco Bay Area ? • Extensive experience in organizing conferences on Stanford campus: • Lepton-Photon 1999,1989 • Physics in Collision 2002 • Easy local access for several institutions involved in LHC: LBNL, UC Santa Cruz, SLAC, and associated active local theory community. • The welcoming party for the new era in particle physics is appropriately sited over some of the key foundation stones that were laid down in the Bay Area. Why Stanford/San Francisco Bay Area ? • The pleasant ambience of the Stanford campus and mutual benefit in enriched academic atmosphere. • Rich and diverse cultural backdrop of San Francisco Bay Area. • One of the most distinctive tourism destinations for social event opportunities. • The innovative spirit of Silicon Valley is one of the main engines of our modern civilization, which has a close personal touch on all of us.

  5. Meeting Venue The brand new Knight Management Center of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB).   8. Proposal Dates for 2012 • Best week: Jun/25-30 • Next alternative: Jun/18-23 • The GSB venue not available for Jun/21-23. Alternative venue is McCaw Hall of Alumni Center: • http://www.stanfordalumni.org/aboutsaa/alumni_center/conference/home.html • in conjunction with another nearby lecture hall. Not as attractive/convenient. • Student dorm accommodation not yet available. • Sunday Jun/17 is Commencement Day which usually result in local hotel availability crunch for Jun/17. • Weeks of Jun/4,Jun/11 still during term time and interfere with Commencement events so that venue availability cannot be assured. • Weeks of Jul/2,Jul/9 overlaps ICHEP (Jul/4-11). • After ICHEP worth considering ?

Travel • There are daily direct flights to • San Francisco International (SFO) • from major international airports, • e.g. Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, • Paris, Zurich, Beijing, Tokyo, • Sao Paolo, Sydney… • Many 1-stop options via other major hubs in US and Canada (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Toronto…) exist. • San Jose International (SJC) has direct flights from many major US airports. Visa • Citizens of many countries can enter the US via the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which now needs a simple electronic application via ESTA before travel. • For participants from countries not participating in VWP, they need to apply for B1 business visitor visa. Invitation letters will be issued based on requests collected at registration. Normal application processing time ~6 weeks. • The SLAC international office is regularly helping visitors on their visa applications and their help will extend to the ATLAS week attendants. • Based on a few hundred recent SLAC-assisted B1 applications, there is ~1-2% chance for “sensitive country” (e.g. China, India, Russia) applicants to suffer abnormal delays, while applicants from Cuba,Iran,Sudan,Syria are the only cases with high chance of very long delays or denial.

Local Transportation • Public Transportation from Airport to Hotel: • Stanford is ~25 miles from San Francisco International: • Commercial shuttles (~$30) or limousine service, cab (~$80) • Cal train to Palo Alto + cab/walk • Stanford is ~22 miles from San Jose International: • Commercial shuttles (~$30) or limousine service, cab (~$70) • Rental car (shared rental car is probably also the most effective local daily transportation. Daily Travel / Parking • For those staying at hotels near regular Marguerite stops, this should be convenient direct service to the meeting venue. • For those staying at hotels further south, the local transit bus system has frequent services to the Palo Alto Transit Station to change to Marguerite service going into Stanford. • We will acquire exclusive use of the whole conference parking Galvez Field (can hold >200 cars) at ~500m from the meeting site and you can park there for free. • In case of overload of local transit system, we have the provision to add charter shuttles for south Palo Alto hotels if necessary.

  16. SLAC Tours • Could offer a limited capacity SLAC tour on Saturday afternoon after main meeting ended (or some other time?), depending on level of interest: • Klystron gallery: still one of the most • unique views anywhere. • Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS) • experimental hall (subject to run schedule) • Collider Experiment Hall (SLD/MK-II) • View of Sanford Synchrotron Radiation Light • Source (SSRL): The most decorated HEP • veteran SPEAR is now serving applied science. • View of Research Yard and End Station A: • where quarks were discovered through DIS.

Informal Social Events • For evenings without official events, host members will establish a few dinner outing options to gather several separate dinner groups. • Nearby wineries with Bay/Silicon-valley view • Local restaurants of wide range of flavors (Palo Alto alone has >180 restaurants). • Dining options in San Francisco • Informal organization to establish detailed signup and adjust selection based on demand. • Help on transportation for dinner groups.
