  7. Edison controlled most of the patents for movies, and he attempted to control both the business and its cultural impacts • In 1908, Edison formed the Motion Picture Patents Company in 1908, also known as the "Edison Trust" (monopoly)

  8. The independents, especially the founders of Universal, Paramount and Twentieth Century Fox studios, moved away from the East coast to California, where mild weather and distance from the Edison company allowed feature film expansion.
