  2. Quasi (somewhat) • Quasi-Official: somewhat official • Your progress report is a quasi-official record of your current grades; report cards serve as the official records.

  3. Monger (seller) • Fishmonger: a fish dealer • The customer haggled with the fishmonger over the price of the flounder.

  4. Gno (know) • Diagnosis: the act of identifying a disease, illness, or problem examining someone or something • After several tests, the doctor’s were certain the diagnosis was a sinus infection.

  5. Pulse (drive) • Impulsive: doing things or tending to do things suddenly and without careful thought • Perry is sometimes very impulsive with his money, not thinking before spending it.

  6. Calor (heat) • Calorie: a unit of heat used to indicate the amount of energy that foods will produce in the human body • Calories are units of heat energy.

  7. Sol (sun) • Solarium: a room with walls and a ceiling that are made of class to allow in sunlight • The solarium was constructed of mostly glass so that it lets in as much sunlight as possible.

  8. Strat (layer) • Stratum: one of usually many layers of substance (such as rock); a level of society made up of people of the same rank or position • The bride and groom were not from the same social stratum.

  9. Nuc (center) • Nucleus: a central or most important part of something • The nucleus is the center of an atom.

  10. Sat (enough) • Satisfy: to cause (someone) to be happy or pleased • I am not very hungry, so this salad will be enough to satisfy me until dinner.

  11. Mont (mountain) • Piedmont: lying or formed at the base of the mountains • The Piedmont region, where Mrs. Chapman is from, is known for its small, rolling mountains.

  12. Kilo (Thousand) • Kilometer: a unit of length equal to 1,000 meters • A kilometer is one thousand meters.

  13. Myrai (many) • Myriad: a very large number of things • The gift shop sold such a myriad of items that it was difficult to select just one.

  14. Tachy (quick) • Tachycardia: relatively rapid heart action whether physiological (as after exercise) or pathological • Tachycardia is a medical condition in which a person has a rapid heartbeat.

  15. Fiss (Split) • Fissure: a narrow opening or crack of considerable length and usually occurring from some breaking or parting • The earthquake formed a fissure in the highway, which made it unable to be used for months.

  16. Cumu (heaped) • Cumulative: made up of accumulated parts; increasing by successive additions • At the end of the semester, you will take a cumulative exam that assesses your knowledge of everything we have covered in class.
