  2. The Third Estate • The third estate had the least authority within the estate general. • The third estate was always outvoted by the other estates. • 97% of Frances population was of the third estate.

  3. Why was the National Assembly Formed? Who was it formed by? • The National Assembly was formed to weaken the kings power of France, and to develop a new constitution of France. • The National Assembly was formed by the Third Estate on June 17th 1789, because the Third Estate disliked their weak position within the Estates General. • The Third Estate also felt that they represented the whole population of France so it would be easy to gain support.

What were the major events that led up to the Tennis Court Oath, what was the oath, and was the oath upheld? • The Formation of the New Legislature or National Assembly led up to the Tennis Court Oath. • The king and his nobles were fearful of the National Assembly. • The King’s advisors told Louis to disband the assembly and arrest its leaders, but Louis did not. Instead he deprived them of their meeting place.

  5. What was the Tennis Court Oath. (Continued) • On June 20th 1789 when the assembly’s members arrived at their hall, the doors were locked. • The delegates then fled to a nearby Tennis Court. • There they swore never to disband until they were fully satisfied with the forming of the new nation. • 576 deputies swore the Oath, which was wherever they met there was the nation, they declared, and they would not adjourn until France had been given a new Constitution.

  6. Was the Oath upheld? • The Oath in a sense was not upheld. • Also in a sense the oath was upheld to. • The overall goal was achieved which was to diminish The power of Louis XVI, therefor the Oath was upheld.
