KIDS-VS-SUN

The skin tans when it absorbs UV rays. This occurs with an increase in the activity and number of melanocytes, the cells that make the pigment melanin. Melanin helps to block out damaging UV rays up to a point, which is why people with naturally darker skin are less likely to get sunburned, while people with lighter skin are more likely to burn.

  1. KIDS-VS-SUN Who are the most vulnerable to sun damage? With the worldwide research undertaken in sun damage and public education offered in this area you would really have to be living under a rock not to know that over exposure to the sun is damaging to the human body especially our skin. People with light skin are much more likely to experience sun damage, but darker-skinned people, including people of any ethnicity, can be affected, too. Sunburns can increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. But UV exposure can raise skin cancer risk even without causing sunburn.

  2. Gone is the sunburnt lifestyle. Living in a sun burnt country as Australia doesn’t always have to equate to sun burnt skin and especially those of our children. What our parents may not have been so aware of in the past, is now part of most Australians daily packing and wearing curriculum. Every preschool, school and organized sporting club requires us to don a hat or it’s a “no-play- outside” policy. What seemed a little extreme initially when backed with medical research and a powerful advertising campaign to protect our skin, Slip. Slop, Slap is now as ingrained in us as our A,B,C. Fashion, fun and functionality – does that work? So how do we encourage and even keep hats on the heads of our babies, toddlers and teens? Not an easy task if I remember the prickly, tight, hot and terrible uncomfortable hats my mum would make me wear whether it rain or shone. Embarrassing to say the least! Lucky for us at The Hat Store we have been able to source some companies that really know about hats and more importantly for the little ones in our lives, they are creating cool and comfortable hats that your kids will want to wear and will even forget they have them on their heads! Don’t let the sun win! Sun protection is the number 1 priority when choosing our kids hats, providing our littlest customers the ultimate in sun protection against those harmful sun rays. Most of our hats are tested for prevention (up to a 50+ UV protection) and have the swing tag to prove it.
