Corrosion Resistant Ductile and Gray Cast Iron By: Erik Anderson and Amir Hesamian Method Objectives: Results: • Reduce corrosion, fouling, and wear of ductile and gray cast iron by developing low cost, durable hydrophobic surfaces. • Demonstrate that the treatments employed in creating such surfaces increase the contact angle. • Establish a relationship between contact angle and corrosion. • Sample Preparation and Coating Approaches • Oxidize materials varying oxygen partial pressure, temperature, and time. • Sol-gel coatings: Sols from trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS) will be coated on cast and ductile iron. • Corrosion and Wear Tests • Measure contact angle • Measure corrosion resistance of metal • Measure corrosion resistance of the coating Figure 2. Polarization data of polished and coated samples Approach: Conclusion: • Use commercially available anti-corrosion coating • Use a combination of surface modification techniques • Chemical and thermal oxidation • Oxidation and polymeric coating • Oxidation and sol gel coating • Mechanical abrasion and oxidation According to Figure 2, corrosion current decreases 100 times for coated samples indicating that hydrophobicity enhances the corrosion resistances of the substrate due to restricted permeation of water and ions to the base substrate. Therefore there is an established relationship between the contact angle and corrosion.
