Needs Assessment: • There is an opportunity to train healthcare workers on the practice of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the H1N1 influenza virus. • The analysis of the gap between those healthcare workers in XYZ hospital who are familiar with prevention techniques vs. those who are not is 60/40. • Implementation of a self-paced, computer/web-based training module that healthcare workers will be required to complete.

  3. Instructional Goal: • After completing this training, healthcare workers will have obtained important information about preventing the spread of the H1N1 influenza virus. • Healthcare workers will be able to practice specific prevention techniques.

  4. Performance Objectives: After completing this training, healthcare workers will: • View a training module on the Prevention of the H1N1 influenza and record completion of the training by December 31, 2009 • Demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter by completing an online evaluation exam with a score of 80% or better • Integrate prevention methods into daily activities with patients at least 95% of the time as observed and documented by supervisors and managers

  6. Learner Characteristics: • My target audience will consist of all XYZ hospital employees. Hospital XYZ employs well over 2,000 employees who will be involved with online module training. • Learner demographics include ages (20-65), gender (m/f) and ethnicity- diverse, mostly Hispanic. • Healthcare workers will need to possess basic computer skills to complete the training. Other characteristics of interest include the target audience having “good” technological, reading and writing skills on a scale ranging from basic to very good proficiency. • In addition, I will need to incorporate the help of senior leadership and administration for the successful implementation of this mandatory online training course.

  7. Learning Context: • The instructional setting for training will be the workplace. Employees will be allowed to complete training sessions on the clock and in their respective departments. In the event healthcare workers do not have access to computer work stations in their designated areas, remote training sites will be made available throughout XYZ facility for training module completion.

  8. Instructional Strategies: • Introduction (a) Due to the growing spread of H1N1 influenza, healthcare facilities are doing their best to promote precautionary measures with their own staff. (b) After completing this training, healthcare workers will have obtained important information about preventing the spread of the H1N1 influenza virus. (c) In addition, healthcare workers will be able to practice specific prevention techniques • Background information (a) Suspected or known cases of H1N1 on the rise in the last several months (b) World Health Organization indicates 254,206 cases of H1N1 and at least 2,837 deaths worldwide (c) In the U.S. (9,079 hospitalized cases and 593 deaths • Signs and symptoms (a) Cough (b) Nausea and vomiting (c) High fever • Benefits of implementing preventive measures (a) Promotes safe environment for patients and staff (b) Organizational cost savings (c) Fewer absences, less overtime

  9. Instructional Strategies: Prevention at the workplace (a) Interactive exercise on proper hand washing technique 1. Staff demonstration, performance by worker, documentation of training (b) Caught clean/dirty hand initiative program (c) Visitor and employee screenings at hospital entrances Management of patients with the illness (a) Patient isolation (b) Mask wearing (c) Social distancing Personal protective equipment (PPE) (a) Types (b) Proper fitting (c) Appropriate use of PPE

Instructional Strategies: Summary of training module training (a) Introduction of the H1N1 Influenza (b) Background information (c) Signs and symptoms (d) Benefits of implementing preventive measures (e) Prevention at the work place (f) Management of patients with illness (g) PPE Assessment (a) A 10 question computer delivered test will be administered at the end of the training to all hospital workers to access the learner’s performance and understanding of the material presented in the lesson.

  11. Instructional Resources: • Learners will need access to a computer or facility department workstation. Each employee will also need access to either the hospital shared drive or the facility LAN or intra-net. This is where the program will be available for review by employees as needed. It will also be made available via the web for those workers not able to access training at work. In this case, access to an ISP is required. • Supplemental materials to be used include but are not limited to personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, use of soap and water and or alcohol gel and good hand hygiene practices. The implementation and daily use of these materials are vital to the success of the programs performance objectives. • A team of hospital supervisors will be needed to help maintain and monitor the “Caught Clean/ Dirty Handed Initiative” which will supplement the H1N1 training module.

Formative Evaluation: • Strategy 1: I will recruit the Director of Infection Control from facility XYZ to serve as the Subject Matter Expert for my design plan. • Strategy 2: The training module will be completed by a small group of employees preferably with some experience with infection control practices prior to rolling it out to all healthcare workers. • The SME will review design plan for valid content, appropriate and current information and the educational flow of the training and make any changes as needed. • The small group evaluators will be asked for their thoughts and comments regarding the training module. Constructive criticism will be encouraged in an attempt to make the training module better. They will also be asked if they encountered any problems or issues as they completed the training module.

  14. Summary • This online web-based training has described the determined effort by XYZ hospital to educate their healthcare workers about the H1N1 virus and its spread. • Prevention of the H1N1 virus will promote a safer environment for staff and patients, whereby resulting in cost savings, improved performance and efficient use of valuable resources.
