  6. About the course • A course of elementary Mandarin Chinese for beginning learners • Emphasizing the acquisition of language basic skills • Language forms and functions (CFL / CSOL) • To be introduced to the Chinese customs, culture, and geography. • Chinese 101 ClassWeb

  7. Learning Objectives and Outcomes • Students will understand: • The whole Chinese pronunciation system (Hanyu Pinyin 汉语拼音), Pinyin foundation • Basic Chinese grammar • The Chinese writing system • Some Chinese customs & culture

ABOUT LANGUAGES • Every human knows at least one language (spoken or signed) • Language = sounds + words + grammar (rules) • Words are finite, but sentences are infinite. • Acquiring / learning a language, learning rules: • Phonology(sound system) • Morphology( structure of words) • Syntax (combination of words into sentences) • Knowing a language: knowing words in that language • Sound units related to specific meaning • Sounds & meaning of words are arbitrary: No relationship b/w the way a word pronounced and its meaning

ABOUT LANGUAGES • Knowing a language encompasses this entire system • Phonology, Morphology, Syntax … • This knowledge (competence) is different from behavior (Performance) • You may know a language, but you may also choose NOT to speak it. • Although not speak it, still have knowledge of it. • Not knowing a language, unable to speak it at all
