  1. Design and Realization of CDIO Elements in Civil Engineering Material Course Gengying LI, Yunping Yang, Guangjing Xiong Dept. of Civil Eng. Shantou University CDIO logo source: www.cdio.org

  2. 1 CONTRAST 2 CDIO PROCESS 3 COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS 4 BENEFITS AND CONCLUSION Overview

  3. Before reform CEM course before reform • COURSE OBJECTIVES: • Enable students to understand, choose, mix and apply various materials correctly • CONTENT: • TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD: • ASSESSMENT :

  4. Before reform Content of CEM course before reform  THEORETIC KNOWLEDGE: • Chapter 1 Basic Properties of Materials • Chapter 2 Air Hardening Inorganic Binding Materials • Chapter 3 Cement • Chapter 4 Ordinary Concrete • Chapter 5 Construction Mortar • Chapter 6 Wall Materials • Chapter 7 Building Steels • Chapter 8 Water Proofing Materials • Chapter 9 Bituminous Mixture EXPERIMENT: Re.Training Aim and Course Synopsis of Civil Engineering for Higher Education, China Construction Industry Published, 2002.11.

  5. Before reform TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD • Basic theoretical principles and knowledge---was accomplished through classroom teaching for 38 hours • Experiment----was accomplished through demonstrated and validated for 10 hours

  6. Before reform ASSESSMENT : • Based on a written examination • An experimental report at the end of the semester

  7. CEM course after reform • COURSE OBJECTIVES: • CONTENT: • TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD: • ASSESSMENT :

  8. Before reform COURSE OBJECTIVES • Understand and apply materials correctly; • Understand and practice the process of designing and developing materials; • Develop CDIO competencies through a teamwork re-design project.

  9. After reform Content of CEM course after reform • THEORETIC KNOWLEDGE: • Basic principles and knowledge: the same as reform before • an extension knowledge : • Knowledge on environmental friendly insulating materials • Heat preservation and energy-efficient materials • ……. • TEAMWORK REDESIGN PROJECTS:

  10. After reform TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD • Basic theoretical principles and knowledge---- was accomplished through classroom teaching for 24 hours and self learning; • Extension knowledge --- was accomplished through classroom discussions for 10 hours and self learning ; • A teamwork re-design project---- was accomplished through self learning, team discuss, conceive, design, implement, discuss and display their products in classroom, then amend their project and follow another CDIO till to fulfil their aim.

  11. After reform Discuss, Implement and display

  12. After reform ASSESSMENT : • Classroom examination • Design report and display of products • Routine performance

  13. After reform PROJECT Reference reading Conceive Operate Value Discussion Design Products Implement CDIO PROCESS

  14. After reform Project Examples • Un-fired bricks • Concretes used for underground structure • Waterproof materials • High temperature resistance concretes

  15. After reform Un-fired bricks • Bricks were developed by using shell-lime and fly ash which considering social and resource problem. And the new brick is an environmental friendly insulating material. • Results of re-design

  16. After reform Un-fired bricks Mixture planning--- Conceive and design Manufacture-- Implement Testing--- Implement Products

  17. After reform CDIO Process for developing unfired brick---step 1 1st mix design • 1st, accomplished reference reading and comprehending • 2nd, selected raw materials and designed mixture based on the principles of environmental protection and energy-saving. • 3rd, applied the first mixture and found that the w/c ratio was high, leading to lower strengths, as shown in Fig.1.

  18. After reform CDIO Process for developing unfired brick---step 2 2nd mix design • 1st, a further reference reading, team discussion and teachers` suggestions---to modified their mixture • 2cd, selected raw materials according to the modified mixture. • 3rd, applied the second mixture. • Polymer was added, the w/c ratio was reduced

  19. After reform CDIO Process for developing unfired brick---step 3 3rd mix design • After the test and analysis for the second designed mixture, the third designed mixture was proposed by the students as shown in Fig.3.

  20. After reform Comments from students Through this project I further realize the virtue of CDIO approach. In the approach we learned how to study, how to communicate and how to cooperate. I have gotten a deeper appreciation of a civil engineer. I realize that we need not only to posses a rich, comprehensive professional knowledge, but also, more importantly, to be professional in learning and conduct ——Dehua Wang

  21. After reform Comments from students It is true that do more, learn more. We should pay more attention to practical abilities, such as independent thinking and self-learning. Teamwork is not a work easy to be done; each member of a team must have his own unique insight in order to complete the project perfectly. How to communicate effectively, how to screen the useful knowledge, and how to use knowledge are all great challenges for us. It is true that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. ——Ynhai Liu

  22. After reform Comments from students • The teamwork re-design project of CEM makes us really go into the construction practice. • We resisted at first doing this project because we thought the experiment being hard, dirty and tired. • However, during the project process we really felt the joy of the harvest of working hard, and understood the knowledge more deep-set through learning from practice. • Here, I show my thanks to Teacher Li for providing us the good guidance, and I also thank my classmates for their good ideas to amend my project. ——Lihua Chen

  23. After reform Benefits and Conclusion • Master a deeper knowledge of CEM than before. • Innovative ideology, analysis ability, system thinking, experimentation and knowledge discovery were effectively enhanced. • Ability to communicate with others and capability of self-learning were improved. • Strongly value the importance of teamwork and how to collaborate with others.

  24. Thank You !
