  2. Decimal number is another form of fraction Example: = 0.5 What is a decimal number?

  3. 312.257 • 312 is a whole number Decimal number is 0.257 • 3 is hundreds . Is a decimal point • 1 is tens 2 is tenths ( 1decimal place) or • 2 is unit 5 is hundredths ( 2 decimal places) or 7 is thousandths (3 decimal places) or Place value of the decimal number

  4. Example : Find the place value of the underlined digit 54.238 → hundredths 17.95 → tenths 0.743 → thousandths

  5. Exercise: Find the place value of the underlined digit : • 432.18 • 11.46 • 27.034

  6. To read a decimal number : • Read the whole number first. • Put and instead of the decimal point. • Read the number after the decimal point and write the place value of the last digit Example: Read the following number 64 . 175 sixty four and one hundred seventy five thousandths Reading decimal numbersMeans that you have to write the numbers in digits

  7. It means that you have to write the number in letters Example: Write the following number Twenty four and thirty one hundredths 24.31 To write a decimal number

  8. Exercise: Read the following number: 36.2 Write the following number: Thirty seven and fifty hundredths

  9. To change from fraction to decimal the denominator must be 10 or 100 or 1000 Ex: = 0.25 What if the denominator is not 10 or 100 or 1000 ? Changing from fraction to decimal

  10. The friends of denominator Famous Fractions 2 × 5 = 10 = 0.5 4 = 0.25 8 = 0.75 = 0.125 = 0.2 Sowe have to use the friends of denominator to change the denominator Ex: = = 0.5

  11. Example: Change the following fractions to decimals: • (1 decimal place) • = ( 4 25 = 100) • 7 = 7 = 7 = 7.2 (52 = 10)

  15. To compare between two decimal numbers, both numbers must have equal decimals places. Example: Which is greater ? 0.76 or 0.9 2 decimal places 1 decimal place Add zero to 0.9 to have two decimal places To be 0.76 or 0.90 so 0.76 0.90 Comparing decimals

  16. Exercise: Which is greater? 1) 29.15 or 29.5 2) 3.5 or 3.05
