  3. The eSafety Initiative • Goal: To accelerate the development, deployment and use of new technologies for increasing road safety in Europe • A joint industry - public sector initiative (Commission, Member States, industry) • Complementary to other measures - not intended to replace them

  4. The eSafety Initiative • A lot has been achieved in one year: • The eSafety Working Group • The Final Report with 28 Recommendations • Two High-Level meetings (04/02 & 11/02) • Joint effort between EC DGINFSO, ERTICO & ACEA • The eSafety Forum (02/03) & 7 working groups

The Recommendations • Accident Causation Data • Impact assessment • Human-Machine Interaction • Implementation Road Maps • Intelligent Integrated Road Safety Systems (including RTD) • Digital map database • Emergency calls and E-112 • Real-Time Traffic and Travel Information • Regulation (automotive) • Legal issues of market introduction • Societal issues (benefits) • User Outreach • Creation of eSafety Forum

  7. The eSafety Forum • Objectives: • To promote and supportthe development, deployment and use of intelligent integrated road safety systems. • To monitor the implementation of the recommendations (all 28 Recommendations of the Final Report, all stakeholders)

The eSafety Forum Organisation • Under the leadership of the European Commission (DG INFSO) • Steering Group: Management of the Forum, organizing meetings • Plenary Sessions: All stakeholders, chaired by the Commission (currently over 150 members) • Working Groups: Specific focus, chaired by industry (currently 7 Working Groups)

Next Steps The Commission Communication • Title: “Information and Communications technologies for Intelligent Vehicles” • Under preparation by the Commission Services, intended for adoption in Summer 2003 • Will bring forward the measures the Commission is proposing to undertake at European level • Madrid eSafety Forum – 17th November 2003
