Traceability • The main goal of an animal disease traceback system is to provide information regarding the source and extent of disease infection • Key to protecting U.S. animal health and marketability. • Traceability1 is the ability to document all relevant elements needed to determine the life movement history of an animal. • Accomplished by uniquely identifying animals, either individually or by group/lot, and recording their movements within the production chain. 1 Relative to traceability for animal disease control

NAIS provides: • Standardization for data elements for IT systems • Compatibility of systems at local, state and federal levels • Opportunity for official ID and related data elements to work with industry-based programs • Infrastructure and information systems • Premises Registration • Animal ID • Tracing

Premises Registration Having the ability to plot locations within a radius of an infected premises helps determine the potential magnitude of a contagious disease and the resources that are needed to contain it. … premises information alone is of critical importance to protecting American agriculture.

Tracing • Nearly 20 organizations are working with USDA to provide ATDs and are at varying levels of being operational and integrated with USDA systems. • USDA’s Animal Trace Processing System provides the conduit for communicating and receiving information from the ATDs by animal health officials for use during a disease traceback. • Complete listing on NAIS web site
