Dutch and Chinese had the most influence. Dutch had the most influence on medicine. Though the Japanese did not believe in performing surgery, they were still interested in the techniques and information shared by the Dutch and added this to their own practices

Ctd… • Eventually, interaction between Japanese scholars and the Dutch began to change worldviews and generations to come. • In the 1720’s the shogun became interested in Western books and ideas and relaxed restrictions on importing books. • Studying the Dutch language became fashionable among intellectuals. • Scholars travelled to Nagasaki to study European science and art. • 18th C. many people learned Dutch to study Western books

  3. They ( the Japanese and the Renaissance Scholars) both learned different languages, to read different texts, to expand their knowledge and worldviews
