  2. Allergy • A hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system • The first symptom appears on the skin: swelling, being red, and usually accompanied with hey fever. • Patients may feel anxious, • stomachache and diarrhea.

  3. Causes • Food Ex. peanut, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, milk, and Ex. egg • Medication Ex. antibiotics, aspirin, ibuprofen, and other Ex. analgesics • Venom Ex. stinging or biting insects

  4. Different Kinds of Allergy • TypeⅠ : Immediate hypersensitivity • TypeⅡ : Antibody mediated diseases • TypeⅢ : Immune complex mediated diseases • TypeⅣ : T cell mediated diseases

  5. The Mechanism in cell IgEattach to the mast cell → mast cells release a large number of chemical substances → the allergic reaction within the body.

  6. Kinds of Immediate Hypersensitivity

  7. Anaphylactic Shock • Also called “Anaphylaxis” • An acute multi-system severe allergic reaction. • Systemic vasodilation →low blood pressure (80/50mmHg) • Severe bronchoconstriction → individual is unable to breathe

  8. Anaphylaxis can be divided into two : • "true anaphylaxis" ---caused by mast cells or basophils mediated by IgE • "pseudo-anaphylaxis" ---occurs without IgE mediation. • The symptoms, treatment, and risk of death are the same

  9. Management • Administration of epinephrine • Intravenous fluids • supplemental oxygen • Preparedness Ex. Prepare epinephrine auto-injectors Wear a medical alert bracelet
