  1. TRILL Liaison with L2VPN • TRILL = TRansparent Interconnection of Lots of Links Working Group • Co-Chairs: • Donald Eastlake 3rd, donald.eastlake@motorola.com • Erik Nordmark, erik.nordmark@sun.com • From TRILL Charter: • “… work with the L2VPN WG to develop interworkingbetween TRILL and 802.1D bridges at the edge, such that a bridged sub-cloud could be attached to TRILL devices in more than one place for redundancy.” L2VPN Vancouver

  2. TRILL Liaison with L2VPN • TRILL is the protocol: • It is implemented by devices called RBridges (Routing Bridges). • It uses IS-IS with MAC addresses and VLAN IDs. • Rbridges look like end stations to 802.1 bridges but are invisible (i.e., look like 802.1 bridges) to routers. • 802.1Q customer bridges can be incrementally replaced by Rbridges. • TRILL typically encapsulates native frames, forwards them between Rbridges, and decapsulates them to the addressed links/endstations. L2VPN Vancouver

  3. TRILL Liaison with L2VPN • Each link (a direct connection or bridged LAN) has a Designed Rbridge (DRB) chosen by IS-IS election. The DRB handles encapsulation / decapsulation of frame from/to the link or can appoint another connected Rbridge to handled this for a specific VLAN or VLANs. • Parts of the draft particularly relevant to multiple connections to bridged LANs are: • Section 4.2.4 = Designated Rbridge. • Section 4.2.5 = Appointed VLAN-x Forwarder. • Section 6 = Incremental Deployment Considerations. • Other Sections of the protocol draft may also be of interest. L2VPN Vancouver

  4. TRILL Liaison with L2VPN • The current base protocol Internet-Draft is -06: • http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-trill-rbridge-protocol-06.txt • Comments on to the TRILL mailing list (or to Donald Eastlake 3rd for forwarding to that list) will be appreciated, particularly as they relate to the TRILL strategy for handling multiple connections to a bridged LAN.
