  1. Federation of Australia By Vishnu

  2. Federation • Federation is a joining of all the states coming together as one country. Australia

  3. History of Australia’s Federation • In 1860s there were six British colonies and the main laws of the colonies were made by the British parliament. The Premier of New South Wales, Henry Parkes, convinced the other premiers to discuss federation. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia and thus we become one nation. • Australia federated because otherwise we would not have very good defence, hence would be target to be invaded by foreign powers. Also federated nation would be better equipped to deal with matters of foreign policy.

  4. What would happen if Australia did not federate? If Australia did not federate … • There would be a prime minister for every state. • You would need to have a passport to enter every state • There would be more and more different rules in every state. For example the driving age limit might change according to every state. • Australia would not have a strong defence force • Australia would also not have a national anthem.
