  2. To avoid losing the Louisiana territory after losing the French and Indian War, France turned the land over to Spain in 1762. 1

  3. Just before turning Louisiana back over to France in 1803, Spain closed the port at New Orleans to American farmers who transported their products there to sell. 2

  4. Americans were calling for war against both Spain and France. To avoid war, President Jefferson decided to offer to buy the port at New Orleans from France. Thomas Jefferson 3

  5. Napoleon Bonaparte Toussaint L’Ouverture At the time of the offer to buy New Orleans Napoleon (the leader of France) was experiencing a major problem. His most profitable colony on the island of Hispaniola was taken over by a slave rebellion led by Toussaint L’Overture. 4

  6. Napoleon Bonaparte Thomas Jefferson Napoleon needed money to regain control of Hispaniola. When President Jefferson asked to purchase New Orleans, Napoleon offered him the whole Louisiana territory for $15 million. Jefferson agreed to the purchase. 5

  7. On April 30, 1803, one of the greatest real estate deals in history took place. The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France. The territory included 828,000 square miles, for which the United States paid less than three cents an acre!  6
