The factors that impacted in the Civil War. Standard 4.3
Anaconda Plan • Lincoln know that in order to win the war they had to destroy all economic support of the south for them to be defeated. • Anaconda Plan (Called that cause of a snake) • Blockade the east coast • Cut the confederacy in 2 by way of the MS River • Capture the capital, Richmond Va.
South • Advantage due to knowing the land. • Defensive tactic = waiting for the North to get tired. • Invaded the North only twice (Antietam & Gettysburg). • Concerned about the powers of the state and national government (Or the relationship of the two)
Confederacy: Union: Weaknesses • Low population • limited soldiers • few natural resources • lacked central gov’t • Few industries • Low supplies • Poor civilian leadership • Not familiar w/ landscape • Lacked experienced leaders • Untrained volunteers • Unprepared for war
Political • Lincoln: The Union • United the North (wanted to preserve the Union) • Generals : not a lot of military background • McClellan had the “Slow” • Grant was the main man • South: Pres. Jefferson Davis • South fought as sovereign states • Belief in state rights • Generals • Lee: very determined & tricky. • Jackson: stood well under pressure.
Economic • North • Manpower/population • Factories • Great food production, • Railroad/Navy • South • King cotton (Traded with Great Britain) • Relied on them for goods & ships (countered by blockades) • South had major food shortages: • Men leaving to fight • Slaves running away
Weapons of Civil War • Ironclads: Iron ships that were impossible to harm during this time. • Withstand cannon fire • Splinter wooden ships • Resisted Burning • Iron Clad ships in the Civil War • North: Monitor • South: Merrimack • Used in the form of blockades. • Primary battle that Ironclads were used: Fort Donelson.
Weapons of the Civil War • Rifles • More accurate than old fashioned muskets • Soldiers could load rifles quicker, lead to more rounds during the battle. * This will lead to the most number of kills in the Civil War. • Minie Balls • Soft lead bullet that was more destructive then earlier bullets • Also used: Hand grenades and land mines. Very primitive version.
