CROP Walk Overview • What is a CROP Hunger Walk?“Neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world.  Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development.” • Ecumenical outreach opportunity for local churches • 25% of the money goes to local needs; 75% goes to global needs • Who organizes the CROP Hunger Walks? “Founded in 1946, Church World Service is a relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries, CWS works worldwide to meet human needs and foster self-reliance for all whose way is hard.” www.cropwalk.org

5. Through the CROP Hunger Walk, we help meet emergency and recovery needs in Haiti and around the world, and we support our local food banks. We’re helping families get back on their feet. Photo: ACT/Christian Aid

Putting It Into Perspective • Overone billion people (about one seventh of the world)do not have access to safe water and 2.4 billion don’t have access to improved sanitation • Over 800 million people lack adequate food • Every day, almost 16,000 children diefrom hunger-related causes – one child every five seconds • In Hamilton County, over 26,000 individualslive on food stamps and there are approximately 32 food pantries in the county

7. What We Can Provide

8. Who We Help Locally 25% of the money raised in our CROP Hunger Walk is distributed to local hunger-alleviating agencies in Greater Hamilton County. We donate the money to Good Samaritan Network, who distributes resources to the pantries with the greatest needs. Local agencies that received assistance from the 2013 WALK: • Sheridan Church of God Pantry $958.58 • Aroma Church Pantry $958.58 • Angel Attic Lunch Program $958.58 • Sheridan Methodist Church Lunch Program $2875.76 Total $5751.51

9. Serving Local Needs • Good Samaritan Network coordinates response efforts and develops opportunities for its clients • CICN virtual database • Skill training • Coordinating resources among food pantries, trustees, and other organizations

10. Message from Nancy Chance • 9.6% of Hamilton County residents are food insecure (25,890 people). • 13.1% of our children are food insecure (10,670 children) • Nearly equivalent to the number of elementary and middle-school students in Carmel • 65% of these families are employed

11. 2013 HUNGER WALK • The weather was a bit lacking but we did complete the WALK • Over 100 folks participated from several Hamilton county churches and businesses • Over $23,000 was raised • $5,751 was donated to combat local hunger needs

Hunger Sunday • Hunger isn’t something we can combat in just one day • Think of ways to keep your church community engaged through the year • Hunger Sunday is a great way for a church to focus on hunger and service by dedicating time and resources • Focus on hunger for service outreach • Ask your Pastor to speak about hunger • Organize a canned food drive and partner with a local food pantry • Engage Youth-Water bottle suggestion or Vacation Bible School • Reach out to local pantries and ask what you can do to help
