  2. The Lesson Study team Teachers who • Teach the same subject / grade level • Have a common planning time to meet (PLC) • Routinely collaborate and work well together

  3. Planning The Lesson Lesson study team works collaboratively to • Identify the standard to be addressed • Establish a learning goal • Develop a lesson or Identifying an existing lesson that will support the learning goal • Edit and perfect the lesson

  4. Delivering the lesson It is not about the teacher… • Anyone can teach the approved lesson - random selection is recommended • It is important that the lesson be followed as closely as possible. The teacher can adapt if needs arises but should note when and why the lesson needed adaptation and share that at the colloquium

  5. Collecting the data It is all about the data Decide what data to collect and assign each member of the team to observe a small group of students closely Data collections might include • Types of questions students ask • Evidence of higher level thinking • Use of key vocabulary • Shifts in thinking that are evident • Student to student interaction • Evidence of skill attainment • Common errors

  6. The Colloquium The team reconvenes to discuss the lesson. A facilitator ensures that all members participate • The teacher comments on the lesson, what worked, what didn’t and explains any adjustments made. • Each member shares their observations making specific reference to data collected • Each member makes recommendations on how to improve the lesson for delivery in the other teachers classrooms • Participants discuss how they can apply what they learned to future lessons.

  7. Completing the cycle Next Steps • Observers teach edited lesson in each of their classrooms with or without observation • Team meets to discuss the impact changes had on the lesson • Team identifies timeline for next cycle

  8. Facilitating Lesson Study • If a coach decides to implement Lesson Study with a team of teachers at a school, what could that coach do as facilitator to ensure a positive outcome? • How would this process relate to Coaching Heavy Coaching Light?
