  2. P.O.P = Proof of Progress

  3. Research from 3 or more sources (this can mean 3 different websites) • Print out your images making sure you have reference to the website you found them on • Make sure you collect images to do with the themes – quirky creatures or Pop Art Year 7 Modelling Project Homework

  4. A product design company wishes to create a range of interesting phone docks for the teenage market. They have employed you as a freelance designer. Year 7 Modelling Project Context

  5. Produce a series of drawings from the resources handed out Year 7 Modelling Project Initial Design Ideas inspired by Pop Art and Quirky Creatures Themes

  6. Design Brief Produce a range of designs and make a model for a phone docking station. It must attract the teenage market and you must use the themes:- Pop Art and quirky creatures as a starting point for inspiration. (You can use either or both) Your model must be made using styra-foam and the hot wire cutter. It must be finished to a high standard. Your model must be to scale. A phone should sit uprightin your phone docking station and be able to charge the phone. As the designer you can decide whether your design includes any other features – this is optional. Year 7 Modelling Project Specification Using the context and design brief write a list of things that you must do to fulfil the design brief. One example has been done for you. (remember, this exercise can get you to the next NC level) • The model I design and make must be made of styra-foam. • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________ • ___________________________________________________________________________

  7. Paste in the homework where you have researched from 3 or more sources/websites. • Put a clear title – Researching inspirational themes • Annotate your work – make it clear where the research came from and say why you chose it. • Develop your design ideas based on the drawings you did last week, your own collected resource and what the teacher has said. • One table group up at a time to practice and experiment with the hot wire cutter. • Produce beautifully presented final designs for your phone dock. Include a title and annotation. Year 7 Modelling Project 2/3/12 Lesson Objectives

  8. COPY and draw from existing images/objects. Re draw and add CHANGES. Re draw and COMBINE the best parts of two different designs. Make sure you show a VARIETY of ideas with REFERENCE TO YOUR RESEARCH. (NC level 4) Clarify your ideas through DISCUSSION with your peers and the teacher. Add ANNOTATION to show you have considered:- size; materials; the specification points; the links to your research. Think about your ideas and write down the good and bad points. Use your knowledge of existing products to IMPROVE your designs. Year 7 Modelling Project 2/3/12 How to Generate and Develop Ideas

  9. Complete final design presentations (to your highest standard) • Make sure you add the title and annotations Year 7 Modelling Project Homework

  10. To Achieve a NC level 4 you will need to produce a clear Step by Step Plan. ( For a level 5 you will need to use this plan without much help ) Complete the stages for making your model phone dock. 1 Marking out onto Styrofoam using ……. Fill in the blanks to complete the list of tools and equipment you are using . Clue – they are done in the order you may use them. 12. Smooth the styrofoam using glass paper. This makes it ready for painting. Start Finish Cut out using a hot wire cutter or coping saw. Is it the right shape? Add the finishing touches by attaching (using glue) extra components if your design requires it. Yes Improve the shape by using a file if necessary. Yes Is it smooth enough? Add details and outline using a permanent marker pen. No Mark out onto Styrofoam using a pen. Add the slot where the phone will sit by cutting out a groove or attaching extra pieces together with PVA glue No Paint the model.

  13. To Achieve a NC level 6 you need to produce a flow chart to show the making stages. Using the stages that you organised into the right order in your table groups, write up a flow chart. Pay attention to what the flow chart symbols mean and how they should be used. Flow Chart Symbols and their meanings Year 7 Modelling Project Name: ___________________ START/FINISH PROCESS Planning DECISION

  14. Write a list of materials that can be used for modelling Year 7 Modelling Project 23/3/2012 Homework

  15. Homework written into planners and final designs checked. • Product Analysis using the ACCESS FM questions. • Table groups going up to practice on the hot wire cutter. • Actual styra-foam blocks handed out and begin marking out onto the surface. • Cutting the styra-foam using either the hot wire cutter or coping saws. Teacher demo for this. Year 7 Modelling Project 9/3/12 Lesson Objectives

  17. Research – look at existing phone docks – print out/cut out 3/4 pics of ones you like. • Try to find out how much they cost. • Reference which website you found them on. Year 7 Modelling Project 9/3/12 Homework

  18. Philips has launched the awesome new Fidelio series of docks. There are a total of five such docks for the iPhone that bring about an aesthetic feel to the way you listen to your music. Among the more elaborate versions is the DS9000 speaker dock that provides with good clarity of playback, a couch-like design to cradle your iPhone and a very rich build. The DS8500 is made to look good with or without an iPhone attached to it, this it achieves with the help of a chic design and sleekness. The SBD7500 is bolder and takes on a more macho look. It maintains the richness and brings about a ‘truly-portable’ design. The DS3000 and the DS1100 complete the line. The DS9000 ($500), DS8500 ($200), SBD7500 ($100), DS3000 ($80) and the DS1100 ($70) will all be available in the App Store. £49.99 Night light clock Product Analysis

  21. Complete final design presentations (to your highest standard) • Make sure you add the title and annotations Year 7 Modelling Project 8/3/12 Homework

  22. There must be a title – e.g. Final Design for my Model phone dock • The final design presentation should take up a whole page – do not start half way down – remember, you usually have one large drawing and then a smaller drawing to show a side view • Your drawing should be a good size – not too small • For the clock we will expect a front view • It should be carefully drawn – not sketchy • Neat and bold use of colour • Outline with fine liner pen to make it stand out • Add labels or notes for further explanations – we call this annotation Year 7 Modelling Project Expectations for a Final Design

  23. Revise the following key words for a test:- • Hot wire cutter • Modeling • Model • Specifications • Initial design sketches • Design development • Final Design Presentation • Styrofoam • Product analysis • Glass paper Year 7 Modelling Project 16/3/12 Homework
