  1. Stormy Times For G-Dubs Disperse at once!!! I ain’t payin ur taxes Mr. Hamilton and I’m thinkin u know wur u can put em!!! • The Whiskey Rebellion: • A tax on whiskey • Hurt the farmers of Pennsylvania mostly • Too expensive to ship grain in bulk across the Appalachian Mountains to market on the coast • Shipped it instead in the form of whiskey • George Washington & Hamilton led 13,000 federal troops to put down the rebellion of Penn. Farmers • The farmers dispersed and went home when they saw the army coming We hate the whiskey tax!!!

  2. The John Jay Treaty • British Involvement • Treaty of 1783 supposed to retract Brits’ involvement in America • They remain on their western posts in 1794 • They continue to interfere and continue impressment policies with American ships • Jay’s Treaty of 1795 • Brits agree to move from western post but not until the completion of one year and the promise of uninterupted fur trade below the great lakes • Brits refuse to pay back U.S. for slaves taken during the Rev. War • Brits refused to compromise on the issue of neutral rights and that they would declare what America’s rights would be • Two Party System Emerges • Many Americans blame the Federalists for this treaty • By the end of G. Dub’s presidency he is very alarmed by the making of a two party system and believes that the country cannot survive this way

  3. John Adams: 2nd President of the United States Yes, I will finally admit it. I suffer from Napoleon complex. Oh yea, and if you see Tommy J. tell him I was the better President! 5’7” Third Shortest President

  4. War & crisis with France Pay me $250,000 if you want to talk with me!!! • The US and France have heightened harsh relations because of French Revolutionary Wars beginning in 1792 • France demands a prior loan paid back from 1778 • Also the French foreign minister (Talleyrand) wanted a tribute of $250,000 before the French would even have talks with US ambassadors • Ambassadors known through US dispatch reports as X,Y, and Z . (3 of them) • XYZ Affair • US public finds out about the tribute and becomes irate • This is a perfect time for Federalist and John Adams to weed out French immigrants (who were big supporters of Jeffersonian ideals) • They created the Alien and Sedition Acts that persecuted the rights of citizens and targeted Jeffersonians more than it did to help protect national security • They could weed out all of the opposition to their party by calling these citizens terrorist!!!

  5. Internal Problems Hey Johnny, it looks like you and me got lots in common. Red Alert!!! We got terrorist living amongst us. So lets take away the citizens’ rights to protect em. Some day I’ll be King George!!! Alien and Sedition Act Patriot Act monitor e-mail and voice-mail messages gather personal information and records from doctors, libraries, banks, and other institutions without having to demonstrate to a court any evidence of criminal behavior obtain nationwide search warrants and search homes without immediately informing residents imprison non-citizens without charge and indefinitely deny a foreigner entry into the U.S. without any explanation freeze the financial assets of an organization without producing evidence it has done something wrong • The Naturalization Act extended from 5 to 14 years the residence requirement for citizenship • Alien Act authorized the president to expel “all such aliens as he shall judge dangerous to the peace and safety of the U.S. • Alien Enemies Act empowered the president in time of war to arrest, imprison, or banish the subjects of any hostile nation without specifying charges against them or providing opportunity for appeal • Sedition Act made it a high misdemeanor, punishable by fine and imprisonment, for anyone to conspire against the government (people who write, print, utter, or publish any false, scandalous and malicious writing) Oh my God!!! Really George??? People of America you have gone from us to this??? For God’s sake man, never say that again!!!

  6. Answer the following questions using your notes!!! • What was the reasoning behind the creation of these acts? Is the reasoning similar? • What are the similarities in the laws? • How could these laws lead to a corrupted government? (Are these laws specific or are there gray areas?) • When was the Enemy Alien Act used in our more recent history? (Think WWII) • Make up a scenario when the Patriot Act could violate your rights and could be used to falsely prosecute you.

  7. Jeffersonian America Not this Napoleon!!! Started his presidency right away with simplifying government (including his appearance) Judiciary Act of 1801 Adams pushes through last minute legislation and the midnight judges Marbury vs. Madison: Marbury wanted his papers delivered to make him an official supreme court judge Marbury sued for Jud Br to enforce the law Supreme Court ruled this law unconstitutional Reinforced judicial review Louisiana Purchase: Napolean sold America a lot of land for $15 million. Size of US more than doubled. Lewis and Clark were two eager explorers sent to discover the new territory and possible trade route from the Pacific Coast A little help from Leslie Edwards and Bartholomew Hunt in what it may have been like to meet Lewis and Clark!!!
