  2. Table of Contents Styles of music according to age range

  3. Ages 3-6 With the help of my parents, the styles of music in which I listened to at this age included: Songs from cartoons: Sesame Street along with Barney were favorites when it came to music at this age. Apparently walking around the house singing the Barney theme song was one of my favorite past times! Also the big comfy couch was a huge hit with me, getting through the 10 second clean up was the biggest accomplishment of the day, and lets not forget about that clock stretch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJa7P6dfmco * The only style change that happened to affect me at this age was the endless amount of Barney sweaters. 

  4. Ages 3-4 (Continued) Dance Along Songs: Songs such as the hokey pokey, in which stated by my parents, was the cassette that was worn out at the end of everyday. As crazy as it sounds it also made quite a change in my life. It must have been some kind of hokey pokey I did day after day, as this encouraged my parents to enroll me in dance class. There I learned other songs such as “Animal Crackers In My Soup” and also “Going On A Lion Hunt.” Now adding dance moves to my favorite songs, I think it’s safe to say I was never known as the quiet child.

  5. Ages 7-10 Moving on from the cassettes, at this stage I was moving on to bigger and better things… • Disney: Oh yes, the Disney phase!! There are endless amounts of features in Disney that were included with my childhood, but the most favored ones by me were the Cheetah Girls for starters. I loved these girls so much, there was nothing I wanted more than to be them! If I do recall, Callista and I have made an endless amount of videos, with cheetah close, fake mics, the whole nine yards, only dreaming to be one of them. • The other Disney “obsession” goes by the name of Jesse McCartney. The man whom I will always remember as my first real crush. His hit "Beautiful Soul” was the one I would always pretend he was singing to me. Such a daydreamer I was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRV1GDuervE

  6. Ages 7-10 (Continued) • One of my other idols away from the Disney people were the very well known Spice Girls. Once again, these tapes I’m sure my parents wanted to throw out the window by the end of the day. Although I didn’t have quite the love for them as I did with the Cheetah Girls, a good ‘ol Spice Girls song never failed to put me in a good mood.

  7. Ages 11-13 Out with the old, and in with the new… • Country: This would be the time I hit that oh so well known country phase. Or more or less, Taylor Swift phase. My parents constantly had CMT on every weekend, and this is where I discovered Taylor Swift, and many other Country artists. It may have that twang, but it’s something that even still today never gets old! Some of my favorites today are Brad Paisley, Keith Urban (), Lady Antebellum, and still the one and only Taylor Swift. • Soundtracks: My next phase was one I still find myself in today. You could never really go wrong with a good soundtrack! It seemed a lot of the movies and shows I watched were associated with soundtracks. I was of course convinced that HSM was the best of them all. Those movies made me want to sing and dance more than ever before. I mean who wouldn’t want to break out into a song and dance in the middle of the cafeteria?

  8. Ages 11-13 (Continued) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP9jXHTtIyg • Musical Theater: As I began to get more and more interested in drama, musical theater began to appeal greatly to me. All of the action going on, then sudden break out into song, it was something I only dreamed of doing someday, and once I was introduced to it by my sister, it’s safe to say there was no turning back. American Idol: Because of the interest that grew in the performing arts, as I stumbled upon this show, I couldn’t help but be in love! It introduced me to many new genres and also made me begin listening to winner Kelly Clarkson.

  9. Ages 14-15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR6iYWJxHqs One step closer to the present… Pop Music: After going through tons of other genres during my childhood, I fell upon pop, a genre in which I’ve heard before but never really had a liking for until now. They were the types of songs in which the beat caught me off guard one day, and I began to listen to it more and more. Popular Music: Following pop, is not exactly a genre but music in which contains many genres. After talking to lost of friends, I discovered the Billboard Top 100 which carries all of the latest songs in which people are listening too. This popular music features many popular artists that I still listen to today such as Pink, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and many more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUs7Pwqg8K4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVFOILb1YcE

  10. Present Day Things are beginning to come together… • Now finally comes the present day interest in music. I feel after almost 16 years of being exposed to music I now find myself a well rounded person when it comes to different genres. There’s none I particularly prefer over another, I have days where I prefer pop, times in which I love the country twang, moods I feel the need to belt out songs from a musical and pretend to be up on stage in front of thousands of people, and so on. I’ve also recently found myself having a liking for Christian music, and also Indie. They just seem to be the songs that can always set the mood, the songs you wake up listening to, and knowing the day is going to go well! I love being able to have a taste for several different genres, it keeps me on my toes always searching for new music, and knowing the feelings will never fade, because as far as right now goes, it looks like the music industry isn’t going anywhere. 

  11. Influence On Genres Media was the key factor that brought me through my country phase, as I watched CMT every weekend, and also the soundtracks that came from various movies on television. My parents played a big part in this, because if it wasn’t for them I would never have been exposed to music in the first place, or enrolled in dance which I continue to do today, that keeps the discoveries of new songs fresh. Also my sister who was in drama before me in her high school years, got me interested in musical theater, and the willingness to perform in front of others. My friends would be the ones who introduced me to all of the newer music, or popular music today. By talking to them and of course knowing all the music played at school dances, it’s no wonder the popular music caught on as a favorite!

  12. Interest In Instruments • Of all the music genres I’ve been listening to up until now, there have only been two artists that have made me willing to play instruments. • The first one is Taylor Swift. Of course! Watching her perform live many times, it seems she is always found with her guitar in hand and ever since I’ve seen how much she loves to sing and play her own songs, it’s always made a part of me want to at least try it out. • The other artist in which sparked some inspiration in me was Sara Bareilles. I find myself to be quite a fan of a lot of her songs, but what stands out to me more than ever is her ability on the piano! Better start dusting off my keyboard…

  13. Outlooks On Society • In my younger years, it’s pretty obvious that while listening to all of the music I did, I never really made a connection to how it would affect society. However, as I began to get a little bit older, I realized just the effect all of this put together, or otherwise known as the music industry, had on everyone. Music is used as an escape for many people, it’s a way they can express themselves and their feelings when words aren’t quite enough. All of a sudden when all of these emotions our expressed to our society, it creates the simple, yet complex thought of inspiration! Evoking the feeling in people to become a do something person, to make something out oftheir lives, to reach big goals and dreams. Our society certainlyrevolves around the actions of everyone in it, and what better way to inspire people to express such actions we wish to see other than the gift of music!
