  3. GRADUATE NURSE PROGRAM

  4. 2 Intakes • January • March Intakes 7 weeks apart (1st or 2nd intake is negotiated at interview) 8 positions in the Acute GNP 2 positions in the Aged Care Program

  5. CLINICAL ROTATIONS • Medical • Surgical • High Dependency Unit (6 weeks) • Emergency Department (6 weeks) • ELECTIVES (6 weeks): - Haemodialysis - Operating Room - District Nursing

  7. Academic Components • Five paid study days • Monthly one hour tutorials • Ward based assessments • Medication administration • Manual handling • Documentation audit • Hurdle Assessments • Infection control • Drug calculations

  8. Other Requirements • Annual BLS proficiency assessment • My Work Plan x 2 • Short presentation during one of the Tutorial days

  10. Specialty Program Introduction of a specialty Aged Care Graduate Year Program (since 2003) as a career pathway choice 2 positions in this program are available for 2010

  11. Projected Population • By 2011 – 17% of the Baw Baw Shire population are projected to be over 65 years of age • 50 % of these people will be 75+

  13. WGHG – Residential Aged Care • Andrews House 50 bed Dual Care facility offering low and high levels of care, using an “aging in place” model. Situated in Trafalgar • Cooinda Lodge 60 bed high care Co-located at Warragul

Aim of the Aged Care Program To support newly registered nurses aiming to pursue a career in the specialised field of Gerontics Low Care: To develop an appreciation of well, aged people in a supported setting High Care: This placement offers the experience of caring for people who are debilitated by advanced age (with or without a disease process)

IMPORTANT DATES • 1st June 2009 - Graduate Nurse Program Match opens for registration and submitting preferences • 30th July 2009 - Closing date for applications to hospital and computer match • August – September 2009 - Interviews take place • 24th September 2009 - Withdrawal/Change of Preference Closing Date • 19th October 2009 - Hospitals notified of successful candidates by computer match and results released to candidates
