  3. What do Kidneys do? • Filter blood • Excrete waste • Maintain water

  4. Where are nephrons located? • Renal cortex (some loops are in renal medulla)

  5. What is the “functional unit” of the kidneys? • nephron

  6. How many nephrons are in each kidney? • One million

  7. What structure does blood enter into within the nephron? • glomerulus

  8. What structure surrounds the glomerulus? • Bowman’s capsule

  9. What goes into the Bowman’s capsule? • Filtrate, including sodium, amino acids, glucose

  10. What substances do NOT get filtered into the Bowman’s capsule? • RBCs, large proteins

  11. What substances get reabsorbed as they go through the proximal tubule? • Glucose, sodium, water

  12. Where is the loop of Henle located? • In the Medulla

  13. What gets reabsorbed from the distal convoluted tubule? • Calcium, Sodium

  14. What is left over after reabsorption has taken place? • Waste products and excess water

  15. Where do waste products and excess water flow into? • Collecting ducts to collecting tubules

  17. Urinary System Overview The Kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra comprise the: ___________ ______ Urinary Tract

  18. Urinary System Overview Urine flows from the _____________ _________ to the _____________ _______________. Outer Cortex Inner Medulla

  19. Urinary System Overview Name the structure that acts as a funnel through which urine leaves the kidney and enters the ureter. Renal pelvis

  20. Urinary System Overview Kidney stones (also called renal calculi) can form when urine becomes too _____________. concentrated

  21. Urinary System Overview True or False. Ureters are able to stretch without a problem and without producing pain. False. Ureters do not stretch much and can become very painful if a stone gets “stuck” inside them.

  22. Urinary System Overview True or False. Most kidney stones stay “stuck” in somewhere along the Urinary tract and therefore require treatment. False. Most kidney stones pass on their own.
