E N D
Look at the two examples below. What tense are they in? • He is going to run. • He will run.
Futuro A. He is going to run. B. He will run. • So, if they are both in the future tense, what’s the difference between the two? • Isn’t that a hard question? • In truth, there is not much difference in meaning. • Let’s think about when we would use each example.
Read each paragraph: • Tomorrow I am going to wake up at 6:00 A.M. I am going to make some pancakes. I am going to watch Pretty Little Liars. Then I am going to pick up my friend Sal. We are going to get ready for the One Direction concert. We are going to meet Harry Styles! • Tomorrow I will wake up at 6:00 A.M. I willmake some pancakes. I will watch Pretty Little Liars. Then I willpick up my friend Sal. We will get ready for the One Direction concert. We will meet Harry Styles!
Besides the fact that neither paragraph is well written, did you notice anything? • Let’s look back again. • If you were to choose one, which paragraph do you think sounds more common? A. Tomorrow I am going to wake up at 6:00 A.M. I am going to make some pancakes. I am going to watch Pretty Little Liars. Then I am going to pick up my friend Sal. We are going to get ready for the One Direction concert. We are going to meet Harry Styles! B. Tomorrow I will wake up at 6:00 A.M. I will make some pancakes. I will watch Pretty Little Liars. Then I will pick up my friend Sal. We will get ready for the One Direction concert. We will meet Harry Styles!
Most people will choose paragraph A. • That’s because it is less formal and more frequently used in speech. • So, we will call paragraph A the informal future and paragraph B the formal future. • Recap: • I am going to eat sounds less formal than I will eat.
Informal Future • Let’s review the informal future. • The good news is that it’s just like English. • The informal future consists of three parts. • Can you name them? • I am goingto sing. • She is goingto sleep. • They are goingto watch TV. • We are goingtostudy. • The verb to go. • The word to. • The verb or infinitive.
The verb to go. • The word to. • The verb or infinitive. • The structure is identical in Spanish. • Let’s translate them. • To go =ir • To = a • Infinitive = any verb that ends in ar, eror ir. • So, how would you say I am goingtoeat? Yovoyacomer.
Informal Future • Remember, we must first conjugate the verb to be. • I am going • Voy • You are going • Vas • He is going • Va • We are going • Vamos • They are going • Van
Try these… 1. I am goingtowatch “The Hunger Games.” Voyamirar“The Hunger Games.” 2. We are goingtoreadThe Fault in Our Stars. VamosaleerThe Fault in Our Stars. 3. She is goingtobuy an iPhone. Vaacomprarun iPhone. 4. They are goingtoplay Call of Duty. VanajugarCall of Duty.
Formal Future • Now we are ready for the formal future. • Can you remember what two parts in English make up the formal future? • Will + Infinitive • Can you give an example? • I will eat tacos at Border Café. • We will shop for shirts at Hollister. • Now, here is a trick question: • How do you say “will” in Spanish? • You don’t… unless you mean will as in “that is his will” as a noun.
Formal Future • So, if there is no word for “will,” how do you say I will eat? • Comeré • In Spanish, you only need two things. • Looking at the example above, can you tell me what they are? • 1. The infinitive • 2. The ending • Can you remind me of what an infinitive is? • What are some examples?
Infinitives • trabajar • correr • comer • vivir • viajar • Note thateveryinfinitiveends in thelettersar, erorir. • Whenyoutranslatethem, alwaysstartwiththewordto. • Towork, torun, toeat, tolive, totravel
Formal Future • Once we have the infinitive, simply add one of the following endings. • Yoé • Túás • Élá • Nosotrosemos • Ellosán
Formal Future • Yoé • Túás • Élá • Nosotrosemos • Ellosán • Where exactly do the accents fall? • That’s right, everything but the nosotros form requires an accent.
Formal Future • Yoé • Túás • Élá • Nosotrosemos • Ellosán • Now, let’s put it all together. • How would you say: I will eat? • Start with the infinitive… • comer • Add é • And voila! • You have comeré…or I will eat. • So, how would you say: We will eat? • comeremos
El TiempoFuturo: “Will” • Yoé Keep theinfinitive. • Túás • Élá • Nosotrosemos • Ellosán • I will speak: • hablaré • I will travel: • viajaré • We will listen: • escucharemos • You will go: • irás • They will study: • estudiarán
Irregular Future • There are a few words that don’t quite follow this pattern. • Can you guess what happens to these next few infinitves?
