  1. Weather Instruments 12A-2 What types of instruments are used to gather weather data?

  2. Measuring Temperature • Fiducial temperature numbers are set temperature points that are always the same under the same conditions. • Fahrenheit scale: • created by Gabriel Fahrenheit. • Set fiducial points: 32ᵒ (water freezes), 212ᵒ (water boils)

  3. Celsius: • Created by Anders Celsius • Fiducial points: 0ᵒ (water freezes), 100ᵒ (water boils) • Units of Pressure • (psi): pounds per square inch • (mb): millibars

  4. Elaborate Instruments • Balloon Carried • Radiosoneds- thermometer, barometer, hygrometer, radio transmitter • Pilot baloon- no device: calculates wind speed by observing flight path with a theodolite • Rawinsonde- large balloon with transmitter calculates wind speed.

  5. Radar: sends radio waves that bounce off clouds and water droplets • NEXRAD (dopplar) also determines wind speed and direction • Weather Satellites (2 types): • GOES: images developing storms, clouds, temp, and near earth weather • ATNS: observes earth’s surface, synced with the sun.

  6. Weather Buoys & Stations • Relay information from GOES & ATNS, monitors sea & shore conditions, sea & air temperatures, atmospheric pressures, wind, wave heights & directions
