  1. Science Starter • Describe a time when you had to react quickly to something.

  2. The Nervous System Communication and Control

  3. Objectives • I will be able to describe the relationship between my central nervous system and my peripheral nervous system. • I will know the three parts of my brain and list one function of each. • I will understand the difference between the left and right sides of my brain.

  4. Two Systems in One • Central Nervous System: The brain and the spinal cord. • Peripheral Nervous System: All the parts of the nervous system except for the brain and the spinal cord.

  5. Central Nervous System • The central nervous system processes and responds to all messages coming from the peripheral nervous system.

  6. Peripheral Nervous System • Neurons send messages to my brain about the world around me. • Neuron: A nerve cell that is specialized to receive and conduct electrical impulses.

  7. Neurons • Dendrites are the “branches” that receive signals and send them to the nerve cell body. • Neurons are connected to each other by axons and impulses travel through them and eventually end up in the brain.

  8. Nerve • Nerve: A collection of nerve fibers (axons) through which impulses travel between the central nervous system and other parts of the body.

  9. Visual Concepts • Follow along with Mr. Wager as he leads you through some visual concepts of the nervous system.

  10. Thanks for the Memories • Long-term memory enables us to recall events that happened to us long ago. These memories can be triggered by a stimulus, such as a song or a smell, or they can be deliberately recalled. Recalling memories helps us to refresh them and makes them last a lifetime. • In your journals, write down you earliest memory, your happiest recollection, or your most embarrassing moment.

  11. Science Starter • Describe the relationship between your central nervous system and your peripheral nervous system. • The central nervous system processes and responds to all messages coming from the peripheral nervous system.

  12. Is That a Fact! • Synapses form in a human baby’s brain at the rate of 3 billion a second. At 8 months old, a baby’s brain has about 1,000 trillion connections. After that, the number begins to decline. Half the connections die by the time the child reaches age 10, leaving about 500 trillion connections.

  13. Discovery Video • Watch the Discovery Education video and be ready for discussion • Senses and the Nervous System Working Together (8 minutes)

  14. Three Parts of my Brain Cerebrum • Cerebrum: largest part of my brain where memories are stored, voluntary movements are controlled, and allows you to sense touch, light, sound, odors, taste, pain, heat and cold.

  15. Three Parts of my Brain • Cerebellum: Second largest part of my brain that is responsible for movement and balance. Cerebellum

  16. Three Parts of my Brain • Medulla: the part that connects to my spinal cord. It controls involuntary processes, such as blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and involuntary breathing. Medulla

  17. Left vs. Right Brain

  18. Lorenzo’s Oil • Watch the movie Lorenzo’s Oil a true story. • Be prepared to discuss stem cell research.

  19. Reflection Question • Which side of your brain do you think fits you better? Explain.

  20. Science Starter • What is the role of the cerebellum part of your brain?

  21. Discovery Video • Watch the Discovery Education video and be ready for discussion • Sixth Sense for Danger: Can our Nervous Systems Predict the Future? (8 minutes)

  22. Central Nervous System Read • Echo read the sections on the nervous system in the text book (pages 84 and 85)and write the summary notes.

  23. Reflection Question • What is the role of the cerebrum part of your brain?

  24. Science Starter • What is the role of the medulla part of your brain?

  25. Nervous System Problems • Spinal Cord Injury: • A spinal cord injury stops messages from getting to a location on the body to the brain. • This would leave you paralyzed and unable to feel touch, pain and temperature in that area.

  26. Nervous System Problems • Alzheimer’s: • A disease where nerve cells in the brain begin to die and you lose brain matter (tissue). • http://www.alz.org/brain/01.asp

  27. Nervous System Problems • Movement Disorders: Parkinson’s, Muscular Dystrophy and Multiple Sclerosis are common neurological disorders. • They are the result of the stripping of the myelin sheath that surrounds the axons.

  28. The Brain Hat • Follow the instructions from Mr. Wager and create your brain hat.

  29. Reflection Question • What does the left side of my brain help me do?

  30. Science Starter • Describe what life would be like if you were living it in a wheelchair?

  31. Test: Cumulative/Nervous System • This test is over the knowledge and skills you have gained over the course of the school year, along with the new information you have learned from the nervous system.

  32. When you are Done • Stay in your seat and quietly raise your hand. • I will come and collect your test. • Answer the reflection question • You may work on your brain hat, missing work, other homework, or read. • You may not: • Get out of your seat • Talk • Get out of your seat • Talk

  33. Reflection Question • If you could do anything over this school year, what would you do over and why?
