TRIAC: Paragraph and Paper Organization • TRIAC is a writing pattern you can use at the paragraph level for strong organization and effective argument. The same components in TRIAC paragraphs can give entire papers stronger organization. • TRIAC has five parts:
Five Parts of TRIAC: • T: Topic • R: Research • I: Interpretation • A: Analysis • C: Conclusion
T • T = theme, topic, thesis: State what the essay is about, the topic the essay addresses, or what you will argue or claim. This opening may run only a sentence or so; rarely will it be longer than a paragraph.
R • R = restatement, restriction, refinement:- The second sentence can restate or restrict what was written in the first sentence, making the subject more specific.
I • I = illustration, example: Support your ideas. Give examples. Illustrate. Sentences that do this are often preceded with the transitional phrases for instance or for example. These discussions form the heart of an essay or paragraph; they give the details that make the writing convincing and interesting.
A • A = analysis: Analysis means telling readers how to understand the examples or illustrations. It means making logical, commonsense inferences between causes and effects, intentions and actions. Words like since, therefore, because, however, and nevertheless all work to signal your logic.
C • C = conclusionThe final sentence (or two) might review what the paragraph has discussed, and/or emphasize what the illustration and analysis suggest. This closing section may also evaluate the connections you've made in your paragraph. Keep in mind that you are also setting yourself up to move smoothly and logically into the next paragraph.
