Early Life • Born in north-central Italy in 1935 to a poor baker and a cigar factory worker. • Early musical influences were his father'srecordings of Beniamino Gigli, Enrico Caruso, and Giovanni Martinelli. • Age 9 he began singing with his father in a small local church choir. • Age 19 took lessons from Arrigo Pola, a professional tenor for free. • Pavarotti discovers that he has perfect pitch.

Beginning his Musical Career • Started an elementary school teacher • Musical success as a member of the Choral Rossini inspires Pavarotti to go pro • Debuted as Rodolfo in La Boheme at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia in April 1961 • In 1963, the celebrated Joan Sutherland choses to tour to Australia with Pavarotti. • Pavarotti later credited Sutherland for the breathing technique that would sustain him over his career.

Success • By the late 1970’s popularity soared in the opera houses across the world • Known for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. • His high C became one of his trademarks. • Noted for charity work for refugees and Red Cross • In 1990 he brought hits previously confined to the opera world to a much wider audience through "The Three Tenors" ( him, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras) • Released “Opera Made Easy” Series in the 1990’s

  5. Legacy • Final Performance: Nessun Dorma at the 2006 Olympics • Remembered as the Golden Voice of Opera • Brought opera to the common people
