  1. Global Education in Union County Public Schools Presentation to Global Education Task Force March 13, 2012 Dr. Ed Davis, Superintendent

  2. Why is Global Education Important? • We live in an interdependent global society. • Students need to develop global awareness. • Students need 21st century skills to succeed. • NC State Board of Education and UCPS both have as a Strategic Priority to “graduate globally competitive students.”

  3. UCPS Globalization Committee • Committee Established in 2008 • Members of committee are administrators, teachers, and members of business community • Defined Globalization • Organized two sub-committees: • Staff Development and Program

  4. Staff Development • World View Global Education Leaders Program • World View online training for teachers • Hosted World View Partners Day 2010 • UCPS TQE Share Day 2010 • Globalization lesson plans on Moodle page • Global Resources Moodle page • VIF Global Gateway training • World View Symposiums

  5. Global Educators Teachers submit a presentation that highlights their work to create a global classroom.

  6. Programs • Global Schools – are recognized for meeting established criteria at various levels designed to promote global education in their school. • Global Scholars – students pursue a specific course of study which leads to designation at graduation as a Global Scholar. • Travel Programs- UCPS supports trips sponsored by VIF and World View. POY and TOY go on trip each year.

  7. Other Student Programs • Global Awareness Course – this course combines geography and current events to study issues facing different countries and involves students brainstorming sustainable solutions. • New Global Citizens- program that works with students to support community service projects with organizations in USA and other countries.

  8. Global Schools Network • 2011-2012 – 21 of 30 elementary schools have a VIF teacher on their staff. Teachers are from Finland, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Colombia. • 2012-2013 – Program will expand to all 30 elementary schoolswith the ultimate goal being to develop Global Passport Schools.

New Programs in 2012-2013 • Global Connections– Middle school course of study to develop global literacy in students. • Global Issues – A series of high school interdisciplinary courses to build a foundation of intercultural competence. • SPLASH- Language immersion programs in 3 schools (2 Spanish immersion, 1 Mandarin Chinese) • Global Partners – UCPS will be reaching out to form new partnerships with business and industry to support our global education initiatives.
