Concordia iCOP Overview & History • Founded in 2008 by five MBA JMSB students: • MalazSebai, Olivier Romain, Tanya Dossa, Alex Dumesle & Carole Charbonneau • Goal was to send MBA students abroad to apply best business practices to community organizations with the belief that every person has the power to make a difference • In fall 2009, formed into a student club and became recognized by CGSA and Dean of Students; changed name from MBA iCOP to Concordia iCOP • 2 students participated in 2008; 1 in 2009; 3 in 2010; 2 targeted for 2011

Past Projects - 2008 • Partnered with Students without Borders and World University Service of Canada (WUSC), a Canadian based development agency • Two participants: Olivier Romain and MalazSebai • Olivier worked with the Municipal Direction of Los Olivos in Lima, Peru providing legal expertise and advisement regarding micro-finance and small businesses • Malazworked with San Arts and Crafts in Botswana, assisting with all administrative, operations, HR and finance duties until a manager filled the position

  5. Past Projects - 2009 • Partnered with M.A.P.L.E. Microdevelopment, a non-profit organization from the University of Oregon • One participant: Shawna Rose • Shawna: worked with female entrepreneurs in Mbale, Uganda, where she participated in the development and implementation of a basic business training and mentoring program. She also consulted with the management team on ways to improve their operational efficiency and lower members’ loan default rates.

  6. Past Projects - 2010 • Kelly was stationed in Mbale where she provided consulting and mentoring services to entrepreneurs who had completed the business development program. She also developed a curriculum and manual for a young women’s empowerment program (ROSE) which she taught 4 times per week. • Partnered again with M.A.P.L.E. Microdevelopment • Three participants: Kelly Laidlaw, Irène Ndiaye Artru & Temujin Louie

Past Projects – 2010 cont • Irène was based in Lira where she performed market analysis for local entrepreneurs and provided consulting services to saving groups in the town and Aromo sub-county. She also explored new avenues to furtherdevelopMAPLE’s Lira branch’activities. • Tem was instrumental in adapting ROSE to include young men through the ROSE Extension Program. The life-skills curriculum helps Mbale street children stay in school and prepare for brighter futures.

  8. Summer 2011 Placements • M.A.P.L.E. Uganda Partnership Continues – 2 placements • Field Operations: • Mbale and surrounding villages • Lira branch opportunity • Work in Kampala alongside students from Makerere University

Partnership with M.A.P.L.E. • MAPLE Microdevelopmentbegan in 2006 as a microfinance interest group within the University of Oregon • Established by students and faculty who shared a common interest in understanding the intersection between development and finance • M.A.P.L.E. has non-profit status in the US, currently in the process of registering as an NGO in Uganda • Focus is on entrepreneurs in developing countries whose income generating activities show the potential to reduce poverty, sustain the environment and improve overall community health and well-being

  10. M.A.P.L.E. Project Samples • Basic business training, consulting and mentorship program with female entrepreneurs from Mbale United Women’s Association (MUWA) and surrounding villages (Soronko district) • ROSE (Reaching out to Spread Equality) program • Microfinance and management of village-based funds (Lira) • Fuel briquettes: manufacturing and alternative income • Low carbon emission stoves: distribution channel creation • Agricultural program and tool library (Lira) • Lira vocational and evening training program for young adults who cannot afford to attend school • Diversification of small businesses and entrepreneurial activities (Lira & Mbale)

  12. Funding • Partial funding received from partners such as CGSA, CCSL, Colours of Concordia, SAF, DOCSE and other generous sponsors • Concordia iCOP will assist to raise funds through a fundraiser comedy show in April 2011

Research Paper Option • Research paper option for 6 credits (MBA 631) • Opportunity to study in depth a business problem or issue of personal interest to the student and to business administration • Chance to apply for a $2000 award if a sustainability related topic is chosen • Next steps: • Refer to MBA Conference Folder --> MBA Important Info • Brainstorm about potential research areas- see list • Seek out faculty advisor to supervise paper- see iCOP • Complete Business Research Project Link-up Form • Seek approval from administration

Research Paper Topic Inspiration • Impact evaluation of Business Education Training programs • Entrepreneurship in Uganda: A study of challenges and successes • Managing Resources - Water, Fish Farming, Agricultural re/development • Women-owned enterprises and women-centric development  Impacts of gender shifts • Moving from ancestral to contractual land ownership Reforestation projects/management • Redeveloping / managing the return of bio-diversity from a marred /war torn population and landscape • Nile headwaters from Lake Victoria Cross-generational economic development, family business, etc. • Millennium Village Project  • Or your own idea- Creativity is encouraged!

Eligibility Criteria • Graduate students currently enrolled in a JMSB program are eligible to apply and will be given priority over undergraduate applicants for 2010-2011 • Only students whose degrees will not have been conferred prior to their placement may participate (participants are required to return to their studies for a minimum of one semester) • Participants should be willing to commit to ongoing support and involvement in iCOP initiatives before and/or after their placement

Eligibility Criteria cont. • Priority may be given to students who are available to travel abroad for a longer period of time and those wishing to pursue the research paper option • Students must be eligible to travel to the destination of their placement • Selected candidates must be able to confirm acceptance of their placement and submit a $1000 deposit to the iCOP Executive team by March 15, 2011
