  1. Using Livescribe Files Pencasts

  2. What is it? My SmartPen, made by Livescribe, will record whatever I say as I use it, and link that recording to exactly what I was writing when I said it. In this course, I will use what are called Pencasts (files that include the written and audio portions of the SmartPen recording) to give you additional instruction in naming molecules, drawing molecular structures, and working with chemical reactions.

  3. How do you play a Pencast? Oxidizing alcohols Pencasts will be stored online. You will access them through links on my powerpoint slides. Each link will have a descriptive title with a small pen icon next to it. For example: Clicking on the link, when the powerpoint is in Slide Show mode, will take you directly to that Pencast.

  4. After clicking the link… You will see this on your screen: The first time only, click on Sign Up.

  5. Adding your account (FREE!) You will then see this Sign Up screen: Enter your email address and any password (twice!) and click on Add Account.

  6. After your first visit… And now you have access to the Pencast! Remember your password because you will have to log in each time you re-open your browser to go to a Pencast. The Log In box will appear when you click on the Pencast link. Type in your email address and password and click on Log In.

  7. Once you have logged in… Click to go to full screen Click to add a comment if you like, but you’ll have to remind me to look for it! CONTROL BAR: play/pause stop/rewind progress slide bar sound control page indicator The center of your screen will look like this:

  8. Full screen mode CONTROL BAR: play/pause stop/rewind progress slide bar sound control display mode In full screen mode: The image shows what will be in the middle of the screen. Any time you want to leave full screen mode, hit esc.

  9. Full screen display mode • Except for the last button, the control bar is the same in full screen mode. • Display Mode lets you choose how the writing will appear as the sound plays.

  10. Display mode options • Show all ink • All the writing in the file shows the whole time the sound file is playing. • Show preview • All writing is grayed out at the beginning and appears in green as the file plays. • Hide preview • No writing shows until it appears in green as the file plays.
