  1. STRENGTH BASED LEADERSHIPPROPERTY THREEWELLBEINGEmotional Intelligence + Positive Psychology + Signature Strengths What is impossible to do right now in your life, but if you could do it, would fundamentally change it?

  2. WELLBEING Compared to those who do not focus on what they do best, people who have the opportunity to use their strengths are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and more than three times as likely to have an excellent quality of life. The single biggest threat to our wellbeing tends to be ourselves. Tom Roth and Jim Harter, Ph.D The Gallup Organization

  3. WHAT FOLLOWS….. ….are the empirical findings of thousands of scientists in disciplines such as: bio-economics; neurobiology; positive psychology; cultural demographics; opinion polling; geneticists, and more. These findings represent meta-analyses and data bases of millions of respondents. In other words, the “law of large numbers.” We’ll start with Wellbeing (WB) and conclude with the three adhesives that hold WB together: Emotional Intelligence (EI); Positive Psychology (PP); and Signature Strengths (SS). 26th! Rank of the U.S. among 89 countries in “positive feelings” – a measure of a population’s happiness despite being No. 1 in GDP per capita. TIME Magazine June 16, 2010

  4. 1. CAREER WB: ANSWERS • Twice • Two-thirds • Monday • Twice • Boss • 1% or 1 in 100 • 80

  5. 2. SOCIAL WB: ANSWERS • 10% • 6% • 61% • Triples • Twice • Twice • Twice • Six • Seven • Twelve

  6. 3. FINANCIAL WB: ANSWERS • Perception • Short-term • 80% • “Positive default”

  7. 4. PHYSICAL WB: ANSWERS • 5 • Broccoli • “Epigenetic inheritance” • 2:1 • 27% • 20 • 6.7 • 7 to 8 Researchers have found that both short (5-6 hrs.) and long (9-10 hrs.) sleep periods can cause health issues. • 62% • 75% • 4 1/2

  8. 5. COMMUNITY WB: ANSWERS • 9 • 20% to 30%

  9. A REMINDER As a leader, your actions and emotions have a direct impact on the WB of others. When you embrace the opportunity to improve the WB of your staff, you create more engaging places to work and greater returns for your department. Remember, if your staff is empowered and engaged, they are likely to: • Be top performers in the workplace • Produce higher quality work • Have fewer illnesses that require time off work • Are less likely to “job hop” • Have fewer on the job injuries • Receive better performance evaluations • Be more creative • Built stronger teams • Use their signature strengths THAT’S ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS!

  10. PROPERTY THREE: WELLBEING DRIVING FORCE 1. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE In 1996 Daniel Goleman discovered a fourth human intelligence: “emotional intelligence.” Also, he scientifically proved that 90% of leadership was attributable to emotional intelligence (EI). EI is comprised of four emotional competencies:

  11. Think About It! Question 1 • How many of you know someone who was removed* from his/her job because they are emotionally incompetent**? Question 2 • How many of you know someone who should be removed* from his/her job because they are emotionally incompetent**? _______________ * Removed = promoted, transferred, demoted, fired ** Incompetent = inept, ignorant, stupid, clueless

  12. How Many…. • Intelligences do we have? • Human cells are replaced daily? • Social relationships can we develop and nurture? • Positive events or thoughts do we need to overcome one negativity? • Of all diseases, which places the largest financial and social burden on society in the USA? • What do the answers to these questions have to do with you as a leader, spouse, parent, friend, human being? Everything!

  13. Your Emotions….. ….are as far from totally random as they are from being firmly fixed by your genes. The evidence repeatedly points to the fact that over 40% of our emotions are chosen by “free will”. Basically, we rewire our own brains (neuroplasticity). Prior to 1970, conventional wisdom held that our emotions drive our thinking. Since then, science is demonstrating that our thinking drives our emotions. All scientific evidence tells us that we have enormous control of our EI including the full range of emotions from positive to neutral to negative. Let’s take a moment and look at our IQ as compared to our EI.

  14. PROPERTY THREE: WELLBEING DRIVING FORCE 2. POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY In 1998, a small but very influential crew of psychologists, led by APA President Martin Seilgman, met and formed a new and revolutionary field of psychology. This new movement sought to refocus psychology away from pathology (abnormality, mental illness, etc. ) and toward positive emotions (happiness, optimism, healthy thoughts). Positive Psychology, EI, and the Strengths Movement became immediate teammates and driving forces in all five essential elements of our WB

  15. Before….. we started our journey into Wellbeing, you probably knew that you prefer to have positive rather than negative emotions. My aim is to explore the scientific basis for this fact and examine the role it plays in your leadership style and in your life. Let’s articulate both positive and negative emotions (3:1) that we want to experience, or strive not to experience…….

  16. The Top Ten Scientific research reflects the following “top ten” positive emotions from those most often experienced to the least. They are: 1. Joy 6. Pride 2. Gratitude 7. Amusement 3. Serenity 8. Inspiration 4. Interest 9. Awe 5. Hope 10. *Love

  17. Current research evidence shows….. “If you want a barometer that can forecast your prospects for flourishing—for leading others and making a contribution—simply check your positivity ratio.” Barbara Frederickson, Ph.D. WARNING……Over analysis of positive emotions will kill them. Over analysis of negative emotions (rumination) will nurture them. Regrettably, our brain is hardwired to favor negative emotions.

  18. From Here On…… ….I’ll distill all that has been learned in the last 10 years about positive emotions into one overarching word….

  19. HAPPINESS…….. ......refers to the experience of joy, contentment or “subjective well-being”, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile. Research has proven that most of us are mildly happy most of the time!

  20. President Abe said… about one of his cabinet members, “Well, I guess he’s about as happy as he wants to be.” Are you as happy as you want to be? If you are, then you’re making quality decisions about your life every day. If not, then you’ve got the right and ability to do so. The greatest birth gift we have is the power to choose.

  21. Set-Point • Happiness is not a static state. At times, positive people feel blue and negative folks feel joy. Our genetics (50%)provide us with a “set-point.” We’re born with a predisposition for or against happiness. Bluntly, we are naturally wired to be as “happy as we want to be.” • However, our set-point can be drastically shiftedupward or downward by our circumstances (10%) and our choices (40%). Just knowing that we have the freedom of choice elevates our hope, which can boost our happiness.

  22. All…… ….of us have the potential to be happier in our own way. I’m going to show you that increasing your happiness and that of others is achievable if you are willing to do some work. Psychobabble, fluff, happiology, self-help?.....No! The body of work we are exploring together, the “science of happiness” was formed by reputable research based on empirical facts. In contrast, “self-help” literature is popular, trendy, and sometimes even helpful, but not supported by science.

  23. A small sampling of recent scientific findings produced by the field of positive psychology are: • Wealth? Conventional wisdom has been toppled; more in a moment. • Education? Sorry, no correlation to happiness. • Youth? Surprise, no correlation. In fact, older people are typically happier (until 75). WB-23

  24. Friends? Yes! A high positive correlation. • Contributing? Again, a strong correlation for those helping others . • Smiling? Yes, once more a high correlation. • Marriage? Usually (but not always) married people are happier.

  25. “Happiness can’t buy money”.Sign on the wall of Turk’s Bar, Dana Pt. Maybe$ can’t buy happiness, but there is a strong correlation between happiness and leadership, promotions and prized assignments. A more chancy and aggressive hypothesis- my own- is that happiness is a contributor to good leadership. For decades, we were convinced that once our basic needs are met, money does little to increase our happiness. Science now tells us that rich people tend to be happier than poor people. Obviously, there are a few (very few) exceptions. More income can translate into greater social status, feelings of personal control and a “feeling” of security. However, the increase is modest. It all depends on how you value it. All of the studiesare showing that it is generally good for your happiness to have money, but toxic to want it too much.

  26. “HAPPINESS CAN’T BUY MONEY” (CONTINUED) Money can help happiness, but is no sure path to it. Here’s the catch: true wealth (WB) means having what you need; money provides only a part of it. We saw earlier a very strong correlation between happiness and leadership. (Promotions, good assignments, teamwork, and more). My new sign for Turk’s wall reads “Happiness can promote good leadership and also buy money!”

  27. IN SUMMARY The fields of emotional intelligence (1996), positive psychology (1998), and strengths-based leadership (2000) are very new. But, they have independently produced tons of solid scientific evidence which point to four common activating agents that promise enhanced well-being and leadership. All you have to do is practice them. And, why not? You will thrive and so will those around you. WB=P + R (N-)(F+) + G + SS
