Top 5 Reasons Why We Have Chosen Organization/Organisation as our focus
#1 Our students from grades 6-12 largely need better organisational skills. Many teachers have advocated that it is their most important need. Starting here
#2 It’s really the rules of the game FromPrinciples into Practice Information Literacy Example:“In requiring students to complete research projects, for example, it is the responsibility of teachers to know the research skills that have already been taught and practised, and to ensure that any new skills required to carry out research effectively are taught explicitly. The process of research becomes as important as the content of the project.
Also from PiP-focusing on Organization (which was used to write the QA ATL Learning Expectations)
#3 We’re already focusing on an ATL in our unit planning, but this makes it more overt and systematic—without a lot of conversations.
#4 We want a visible victory • The collaborative process across disciplines was heavily scrutinized in the Self-Study report. • We can accomplish more for our students if we set the same standards, work together, and measure achievement.
What the parents will see From this To this
What the IB will see-survey data Tracking mechanism #1= Before and after survey done in PSE
What the IB will see-e-portfolios Tracking mechanism #2= Organisation section of e-portfolio (matching PP Journal model which is why grade 10 already has examples.)
#5 • In 2014, ATL’s are staying when the AOIs go. • They are becoming a continuum, PYP through MYP to DP.
Aims of this session • Review the student questionnaire – is it age appropriate? Anything missing? Is there too much? – feedback. • Make sure our Atlas units have ATL Organisation as one of our focuses. Narrow ATL for the unit down to 2 maximum, as the intent is that it is “taught explictly”. • Discuss any explicit teaching that has already taken place or is planned for next week. • Note: PSE grade 6-10 will focus upon organization in the coming weeks to support the students/goals.
Next Week • Use the survey as a guide for your age group to teach and track some organizational skills “explicitly.” • Wednesday, September 18= Organisational Conversation • Bring the best examples of your personal organization. • Bring the best examples of work you have done to help organize students.
Weds. October 10-IPT Check-in • Track progress through anecdotal evidence. • View and discuss survey results. • View some initial e-portfolio evidence.
November 28—IPT Finale • Organize and analyze post survey data compared to pre-survey data for overall level of success. • Send to grade manager: • Names of students in need of additional assistance. • Models of best e-portfolios for use in grade level assembly. • Share success stories. • Discuss most successful strategies and embed in unit planners with reflection.
