Learning Goal To be able to discuss examples of foreshowing in TRF and their effect
Foreshadowing • Hinting at what is later to happen How to use this word: Changez’s reaction to…. foreshadows his later reaction to… This was foreshadowed by… This was foreshadowed on numerous occasions…
Foreshadowing • A text feature. • Other text features of TRF include: • Use of dramatic monologue • Framed narrative
Effect of foreshadowing • Can create tension and suspense within both the framed and framing narrative • Changez’s experiences within the framed narrative and how they are revealed to us, creates suspense within the framed narrative, and affects how we expect him to react to the American in the framing narrative. • E.g. “we were expected to contribute our talents to your society…we were happy to do so…at least at first” – 4-5
Some examples so far • “I am a lover of America” – p1 • “we were expected to contribute our talents to your society…we were happy to do so…at least at first” – 4-5
“And that, as you will come to understand, is saying a great deal” – 50 • “My world would be transformed, just as this market around us has” – 51 • “we have acquired a certain familiarity with the recent history of our surroundings, and that – allows us to put the present into much better perspective” – 52 - perhaps trying to intimidate?
Return to Learning Goal • Find example of foreshadowing on page 24. Discuss it’s effect. • What does it hint at? • What does this add to the novel?
