Directions • For each problem sketch a graph of the situation described. In each case, the graph should show the distance (meters) between the person and the object as a function of time (seconds).
Problem 1 • Marty is standing .5 meters from a desk when he starts walking away from it, until he is 3.5 meters from the desk. He stays there for 2 seconds, then walks back toward the desk. All of this takes 10 seconds.

Problem 2 • Wendy is standing 3 meters from the window. She is getting hot, so she moves closer to the window. Once she is 1 meter from the window she gets cold again and decides to move back where she started. She does all this in 10 seconds.
Problem 3 • Robert is standing 4 meters from the pool. His brother is about to jump in so he moves so he is 6 meters from the pool. After his brother jumps, Robert moves back toward the pool so he is 2.5 meters from the edge of the pool. This takes 10 seconds.
Problem 4 • William is standing 2.5 meters from a man on the train. William notices the man smells like cigarettes so he moves away so that he is 5 meters from the smoker. • Then he notices he is standing near a woman with really bad body odor, so he decides he would rather smell cigarettes than B.O. so he moves so that he is 3 meters away from the smoke-smelling-man. • This entire process lasts 10 seconds.
