  2. Turn to page 87 in your hard back book! • Study the place value chart at the top of the page. • Look at how the names and values of decimal number places (tenths, hundredths, thousandths) relate to those for the whole numbers. • Describe any patterns you see!!!

Decimal numbers Whole numbers • A whole number can’t be a fraction of a number or have a decimal • A whole number is on the left side of the point • The name of the group (such as thousands) is included when a whole number is read • The word “and” is not used when saying or writing whole numbers • A decimal is part of a whole number, e.g., 0.5 is half of a whole number • A decimal number includes a decimal point and digit(s) to the right of the decimal point • the only name read is that of the greatest decimal place when a decimal number is read • The word “and” is used to represent the decimal point when saying or writing decimal numbers

Modeling Whole Numbers • Select the cards that can be used to form the whole number 2,435. • Place the cards on top of each other to display the number in standard form (2,435). • What do the little numbers in the upper right corner of each card represent when the cards have been overlapped to show a whole number? • They represent the number of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands that make up the whole number.

  8. Modeling Decimal Numbers • Use the frame at the bottom of page 87 in your hard back book to make the following numbers: 5.34 2.6 972.8 • When you are done, practice reading the numbers aloud!

  9. Use your cards to form pairs of numbers that sound alike…. • 8,000.07 and 8,700 • 900 and 0.09 • When you are finished….write the word form of each number above! Don’t forget to stress the –ths at the end of the decimal numbers! Only use the word “and” for the decimal!

  10. Mixed Number Review • A mixed number is made up of a whole number and a fraction! • We say “and” after the whole number just as we say “and” for the decimal point in a decimal number. • 7 = 7.31 means 7 +
