Sighet, Transylvania Elie Wiesel spends most of his childhood here. This is where the story starts out. He is a devout Jew and studies the inner workings of Jewish mysticism.
Cattle Cars Elie and his family are packed into cattle cars to make the long journey from Sighet to Auschwitz. Madame Schächter goes crazy in the cattle car. She thinks she sees fire in the cattle car.
Getting off the Cattle Cars and going towards Auschwitz Here the Wiesels leave the cattle cars and the German soldiers begin to separate the working from the non-working. Elie and Cholmo are put into Auschwitz to work and Sarah Wiesel and her 3 daughters are sent to Birkenau, the death camp.
Factory at Auschwitz Elie and Cholmo had to keep up their health to keep working and not get sent to the crematoria. The guards were brutal and beat the inmates severely.
Buna Cholmo and Elie are sent to Buna Factory to sort electrical parts. Here the guards hang a man in the factory for stealing. This event traumatizes Elie. And after this the workers retaliate and so the SS retaliates back by torturing a Dutch overseer and hanging three other people.
Gleiwitz This is the new place that the inmates are sent to run towards when Buna is being bombed at and the SS decided to shut it down. Elie and Cholmo run the 42 mile route to Gleiwitz through the snow. Anyone who faltered during the journey was shot by the SS soldiers.
Buchenwald Bunks In Buchenwald Elie tries to Nurse his father back to health. Cholmo ends up dying from dysentery, diarrhea, and malnutrition. Elie begins to slip into a series of hallucinations.
Crematorium After Elie’s delirium he wakes up. Cholmo is gone and Elie feared that the guards had taken him to the ovens when he was still breathing.
Camp children that survived In April of 1945, American force liberate the Buchenwald and Dachau camp. Elie falls sick with food poisoning. And Hitler commits suicide.
