  1. Network Quality Monitoring System NQMS

  2. Basic concept Network Quality Monitoring System (NQMS) is a system that enables Internet users to measure quality of their Internet connection and report it automatically to the regulator. The system is a part of the Polska Szerokopasmowa Project (Broadband Poland Project).

  3. Measurements The system is designed to measure different network protocols and related connection parameters in order to provide the whole image of the connection quality for all services required and to detect unauthorised specific network policies (e.g. p2p traffic limitations).

  4. Measured network parameters • Measurements performed for different protocols (http(s), ftp, p2p, telnet, ssh, streaming media) • Different measurements depending on the protocol (e.g. bandwidth, delay and jitter for VoIP and videocalling, response time and page loading time for HTTP etc.) • Downlink and uplink measurement

  5. Additional test principles • Tests are supposed to be performed to all or indicated servers from a list maintained by the system server. • The system measures also other connection related issues, e.g. DNS and proxy efficiency, in order to detect other potential problems that can provoke quality problems.

  6. System architecture • Main System Server (SS) • Test Servers (TS) • Measurement Tool (MT)

  7. Main System Server (SS) • Exchanges data with Test Servers and Measurement Tools • Contains and manages the Test Server List that contains IPs, addresses, geolocations and property information of test servers • Provides interface to collect measured connection related data • Collecting test results in its database • Creates statistics and reports of measured networks • Provides a graphical interface for the Measurement Tool • Provides updates for Test Server software

  8. Test Servers (TS) • Standardised servers owned and located by operators and Internet content providers that were introduced to the test program • Contains software provided and signed by the NQMS system owner • The installed software contains standardised test data and enables the NQMS system users performing identical test to every server registered in the program. • The TS application is protected against unauthorised modifications.

  9. Measurement Tool • Is loaded to the customer computer from the Main System Server through the Polska Szerokopasmowa Portal being a part of its interface • Exchanges data with SS and TSs • Measures defined connectivity parameters to all or chosen Test Servers registered on the Test Server List • Sends results to the Main System Server • Visualises results in an Internet Browser
