CRIME STATISTICS HOW ARE THE STATS COMPILED? • Uniform Crime Reports of the Federal Bureau of Investigation • Use local police department information • Contain limitations • not all crimes are reported • officers can decide when to write an official report • fair/unfair?
Think about it! • UCR reports are sometimes considered flawed: • Reports submitted voluntarily by law enforcement agencies • Over represent lower classes and minorities • Some crimes not likely to be reported • Some crimes happen in private settings • White collar crimes are not always included
